| Hallowed Dreams goes for No. 17 By Mary Rampellini Daily Racing Form | |||
|
In horse racing, you're only as good as your last win - meaning Hallowed Dreams has been going good ever since May 20, 1999. That is the date she debuted and started a win streak that last month equaled Citation, Cigar, and Mister Frisky's 16 consecutive victories. On Saturday night she will go for win No. 17 in the $36,500 Millennium Stakes at Evangeline Downs in Lafayette, La. Hallowed Dreams will be odds-on to win the six-furlong race, which has drawn four other fillies and mares. The race was not part of the track's original stakes schedule, but was created last week by management at Evangeline Downs. Despite being criticized for taking a conservative route and racing the talented Hallowed Dreams against soft company in her native Louisiana, it is somewhat fitting that trainer Lloyd Romero has chosen to try to get win 17 at Evangeline Downs. It is there that Hallowed Dreams debuted. It is there that she won the richest race of her career, the $120,000 D.S. Shine Young Futurity. And it is there that she topped champion Personal Ensign's 13 straight wins by an undefeated horse when she romped by four lengths in the $30,000 Tellike Handicap June 3. Hallowed Dreams is also stabled at Evangeline Downs, which gives her an added edge in the Millennium. "It would be very hard for someone to come in and beat her," said Selina Bremermann, assistant to Romero. "This is her backyard. When you train over a certain surface every day, you get to know that ground. There's no surprises." Louisiana won't be the only state watching Hallowed Dreams on Saturday. The Millennium is to be simulcast to about 270 sites worldwide, and as the seventh race on a 12-race program is scheduled to go off at 9:03 p.m. Win, place, exacta, and trifecta wagering will be available, making the possibility of a minus place pool a distinct possibility. | |
