Allen Jerkens pulled off another upset Friday night as Bowman's Band ($26.60) won the Grade 2, $400,000 Meadowlands Cup beating Breeders' Cup Classic winner Volponi in the process. Bowman's Band beat Dynever by 1 3/4 lengths with Unforgettable Max third. Volponi, the 9-10 favorite, finished fourth but was elevated to third as Unforgettable Max was disqualified for bumping Volponi shortly after the start. Bowman's Band ran the 1 1/8 miles over the fast track in 1:48.84. Bowman's Band was making his debut for Jerkens. Owner Martin Schwartz transferred the 5-year-old horse from Michael Matz to Jerkens following a fifth-place finish in the Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park. Schwartz wanted to race the horse closer to the New York metropolitan area. He also hoped Jerkens could work some of his magic. "He just came last week," Jerkens said. "He obviously was in good shape. It's bad luck for the other guy but it's good luck for me." Ramon Dominguez rode Bowman's Band to his fifth win of the night. He gave Bowman's Band an ideal stalking trip behind the pacesetting Unforgettable Max and collared that rival at the top of the stretch and braced for the late charge from Dynever who rallied from last in the six-horse field. Volponi was a hard-charging second in last year's Meadowlands Cup before pulling off the upset in the Breeders' Cup Classic. He didn't have the same response this time. "He just wasn't there for me," said jockey John Velazquez. "They got the jump on me and he had too much ground to make up." | |||||||||
