ARCADIA, Calif. -- A two-turn race is next for Icecoldbeeratreds, but not the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Trainer Bob Baffert said Tuesday that Icecoldbeeratreds will skip the Breeders' Cup and aim instead for the $125,000 California Cup Juvenile on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita. Winner of the Grade 2 Del Mar Futurity Sept. 11, and runner-up in the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont Park on Saturday, Icecoldbeeratreds will be favored in the 1 1/16-mile California Cup. Icecoldbeeratreds has won 3 of 5 for owner-breeder Mike Pegram.

The 1 1/8-mile distance of the BC Juvenile would have posed a challenge for Icecoldbeeratreds, a son of In Excess, and Baffert already has three colts pointing for the Juvenile - Vindication, Kafwain, and Bull Market.

Vindication worked a mile Tuesday at Santa Anita in 1:39.40, and will be ridden by Mike Smith in the Breeders' Cup. Baffert said Jerry Bailey will ride Norfolk Stakes runner-up Bull Market, and Victor Espinoza will retain the mount on Norfolk winner Kafwain.

Baffert will also start Composure and Santa Catarina in the BC Juvenile Fillies, and War Emblem in the Classic. Baffert said War Emblem galloped well on Monday, and that a seven-furlong workout Saturday "woke him up."

Mandella trio set for Cup
Trainer Richard Mandella's trio of Breeders' Cup contenders - Pleasantly Perfect (Classic), The Tin Man (Turf), and Listen Indy (Juvenile) - came out of their weekend races in good shape and leave Oct. 19 for Chicago. Pleasantly Perfect's Goodwood Handicap win was among the most impressive of the California preps.

"I was surprised at how good he did it, when he left the gate he wasn't doing his dumb things, he was in the race," Mandella said. "Then on the far turn, the size of his stride compared to the others - it was just a matter of math."

Pleasantly Perfect won by 3 1/4 lengths, and finished like a colt who will improve when going from nine furlongs to the 1 1/4-mile distance of the BC Classic.

After Arlington was chosen to host the 2002 Breeders' Cup, Mandella was among the many trainers polled regarding the distance of the 2-year-old races. Mandella's recommendation was to run them around one turn.

"I'm glad they didn't listen to me," Mandella said. Listen Indy, third in the 1 1/16-mile Norfolk, will surely benefit from the additional half-furlong of the 1 1/8-mile Juvenile. "He looked as good as the [one-two finishers] at the wire, and he should smarten up from it."

Clement Hirsch winner The Tin Man will point for the BC Turf, though Mandella said the BC Mile will remain an option. He said Espy, a distant fourth in the Oak Leaf for 2-year-old fillies, may have reacted to the heat. He said she will be freshened, and then return in a sprint.

BC points may alter Zucker's plans
Crafty C.T., runner-up in the Ancient Title Handicap on Saturday, will start next in either Chicago, New York, or Maryland. Crafty C.T. may not have enough points to automatically be included in the BC Sprint field.

"I think he deserves a chance [in the BC Sprint], if they give him one," trainer Howard Zucker said Tuesday. "If there's a spot for us, we'll take it."

There are other options.

The Grade 1, six-furlong De Francis Dash on Nov. 16 at Laurel, and the Grade 1 Cigar Mile on Nov. 30 at Aqueduct are two races Zucker said Crafty C.T. could run in. "There's still a lot of horse left," Zucker said. "He came back prancing, and tearing the barn down."

Crafty C.T. has won 4 of 11 career starts.

Meanwhile, the Zucker-trained Apalachian Thunder stamped himself as a leading 2-year-old turf runner with a sharp maiden win Sunday. The autumn goal for the gray is the Generous Stakes during the Autumn Turf Festival at Hollywood Park.
