Tuesday, April 18 Honor Roll: A young man for all seasons By David Nichols ESPN's Scholastic Sports America |

Matt Lottich, a senior at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, is a multi-talented honor roll athlete who excels both in the classroom and on the playing field. "I don't know anybody that has affected anybody's athletic program as much as Matt Lottich has to our program," says New Trier athletic director Robert Naughton.
He takes cross-training to a whole new level. Besides success on the baseball field, Matt is also an All-State quarterback, and his competitive drive also reigns on the basketball court. "Pick up a football game, I'm quarterback. Basketball games, I want the ball in my hands. And pitcher, I actually wasn't that great of a pitcher; people helped develop me," he says.
As team captain of the New Trier basketball team, Matt averaged nearly 23 points, four assists and two steals per game. "Matt loves the opponent because without them there's no game at all. The greater the opponent, the more game he's got!" says Matt's father, David Lottich. Friends say you could not find a better guy to lead the way than Matt Lottich. "He doesn't shy away from the limelight," says basketball teammate Tom Duda. "If there's a problem he thinks needs to be addressed on the team or an issue or concern, he's the one to voice it."
Matt started on the basketball team for New Trier as a freshman at the mere age of 14. According to basketball coach Rick Malnati, "the thing that Matt really possesses that you don't see in other kids is that he lets it all go every single day in practice, and when he plays at game speed it's not much different than how he practices."
The difference in Matt's game made him very popular among recruiters. Matt's dreams came true when he was signed by Stanford University to a basketball scholarship. Behind it all is one special person, Matt's father David. "My dad's made numerous sacrifices for me," says Matt, "and I thank the Lord for him."
Besides a great high school career and comparisons to being the best, in the end, Matt Lottich really wants to be remembered for his spirit and determination. I'd just like to say that Matt Lottich instills a sense of belief for the New Trier team," he says. "With hard work, you are as talented as the guys you're going to play, and with hard work you're going to succeed!" Be sure to watch Scholastic Sports America at 1 p.m. ET Mondays on ESPN. |
