DENVER -- The Colorado state's defending Class 4A prep football champion might not be allowed to defend its title because players smeared their uniforms with a slick cooking spray.
State high school athletic officials said Loveland would not be required to forfeit its 20-12 defeat of Greeley Central, but must address the issue before it can proceed in the 4A playoffs.
"At least some of the coaches knew about it ahead of time. It's something I've never come across. I've talked to officials, and they said it doesn't happen a lot," said Bill Reader, associate commissioner of the Colorado High School Activities Association.
He said the players put the nonstick cooking spray Pam on their uniforms.
"I don't know if it altered the outcome of the game, but they were a little more difficult to block and tackle," said Steve Burch, Greeley Central head coach.
During the first half, Greeley Central players complained they were having trouble tackling their opponents. Officials required some of the Loveland players to put on clean jerseys.
"In high school sports we're supposed to be teaching the lessons of life. I guess competition brings out the best and worst in people," Burch added.
Loveland athletic director Devin Anderson said school officials were working on a response to the high school activities association. |
