De La Salle's national streak reaches 117 games

Associated Press

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Maurice Drew scored four touchdowns as De La Salle beat Long Beach Poly 29-15 on Saturday night in a meeting of the country's top two high school teams.

The win extended De La Salle's national record winning streak to 117 games. It was the first meeting ever between high school teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2.

Drew scored all four De La Salle touchdowns, catching two first-half scoring passes from Matt Gutierrez. He also had 17- and 22-yard TD runs for the Spartans (4-0), ranked second by USA Today.

Brandon Brooks threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Marcedes Lewis and ran 1 yard for touchdown for No. 1 Poly (3-1).

The loss was Poly's first since it fell to Santa Ana Mater Dei in the 1998 Southern Section Division I final. The Jackrabbits are 57-2-1 since the start of the 1997 season.

The game was played before an overflow crowd of 17,321 at Long Beach Veterans Stadium, which added 3,000 bleacher seats for the game.
