Coffee with a Coach By Michael Austin SchoolSports.com | ||||||
Already with a national championship in hand, Florida State University senior Peter Warrick completed the dream of any college football player when he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals with the No. 4 overall pick in Saturday's NFL Draft. Warrick was the first receiver selected, and his statistics show why. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound receiver caught 71 balls for 934 yards and eight touchdowns this fall. Warrick, a finalist for both the Heisman and Biletnikoff Awards, also ran for three touchdowns while carrying the ball 16 times for 96 yards. He was an All-American selection the last two seasons. Paul Maechtle, Warrick's former football coach at Southeast High in Bradenton, Fla., spoke to SchoolSports.com about the talent and work ethic that got his former superstar to where he is today.
Coach Maechtle: His God-given skills and work ethic have enabled him to realize his potential. He knows that if he stayed stagnant, people would surpass him. Not to mention, he's got the speed, moves and peripheral vision that most people don't have SS.com: How far did Peter and his high school team go throughout his career? Coach Maechtle: They won back-to-back state titles with Peter as a wide receiver as a junior and a quarterback as a senior. He also was part of a asketball team that went 35-0, and was an incredible long jumper for the track team. SS.com: What was it like to have a talent like Peter on your football team? Coach Maechtle: He was exciting to watch. You knew every time he got the ball there was a chance for a big play. SS.com: Name one thing about Peter's game in high school that people wouldn't know about. Coach Maechtle: Peter was a great quarterback for us his senior year. He had a good season throwing the ball. Warrick, now known for his receiving skills, completed 49 of 94 passes his senior season for 1,068 yards. Between his time under center and returning kicks, Warrick tallied 90 points during his last year at Southeast High. SS.com: What part of Peter's game has improved the most since high school? Coach Maechtle: Everything has come along. He's gotten stronger and bigger. I guess the one thing that he has been able to do is handle the pressure of being under the microscope. SS.com: Did you always think that Peter could get to where he is today? Coach Maechtle: Yes. It's almost like he has eyes looking out his ear holes. He can see the defender coming from anywhere, change direction and give a burst of speed to get by him. Not everybody has it.
