Basketball Recruiting Buzz By Jeff Goodman SchoolSports.com | ||||||
Bradenton Southeast High (Fla.) shooting guard Adrian McPherson, who also doubles as a standout quarterback, is down to a pair of schools:
McPherson grew up a Tar Heels fan, and our bet is that he'll head to Chapel Hill, where he can follow in the footsteps of current two-sport stars Ronald Curry and Julius Peppers. But the 6-foot-4, 185-pound senior, who is averaging 32.8 points, 11 rebounds and a staggering nine steals per game this season, will visit FSU this weekend and expects to have a decision sometime next week. The Seminoles will also allow him to play both basketball and football, as Charlie Ward and Brad Johnson each did when they were in Tallahassee. "I look at it as Florida State is dominant in football, but I've got a great amount of confidence that coach [John Bunting] will get it turned around at Carolina," says McPherson, who recently crossed Arkansas, South Florida and Michigan State off his list. "But Florida State plays in the ACC in basketball, and that's a great conference. I just want to go somewhere that I'm comfortable. "One day I see myself in Carolina blue, and the next day I see myself a Seminole and in a different color."
Kentucky Dreamin' Chiles had been overlooked by all the major programs because he was considered too small to be a 2-guard in college. But Smith called Chiles about a month ago and then offered him a scholarship last week. "It can't get any better than this," says Chiles, who is averaging 17.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. "I didn't really even have UK on my list, but deep down it's really where my heart is and where I wanted to go." The schools that were courting Chiles prior to the Wildcats entering the mix were Miami (Ohio), Virginia Tech and the University of Alabama-Birmingham. "He scores in a multitude of ways and does a little bit of everything," says Ballard coach Chris Renner. "He has the ability to play the point guard, but he doesn't play the point for us." Chiles' teammate, 6-foot-9, 245-pound Brandon Bender, is also among a handful of elite seniors yet to commit to a college. Bender will be a power forward in college and has narrowed his list down to Alabama, Tennessee, Louisville and Kentucky. Ballard's biggest test of the season should come in late February against nationally ranked Louisville Male High (Ky.) and its forward duo of Larry O'Bannon and Michael Bush. O'Bannon is a senior who told SchoolSports.com last week that he will probably choose Tennessee over Dayton, Murray State and Oregon State. Bush is just a sophomore, but the 6-foot-3 swingman/wide receiver already has a few offers on the table. "I'd like to play both sports in college," says Bush, who racked up 989 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns this past season and is averaging about 18 points per game on the basketball team. That shouldn't be much of a problem since he says Louisville, Alabama and LSU have all offered scholarships that will allow him to play both sports. Kentucky and Ohio State have each offered football scholarships. Bush also pitches and plays first base on the baseball team, but don't expect him to go that route at the next level as well.
Bracin' for Action He favored Arizona a year ago, but his list is now headed by Texas, Tennessee and Missouri. It also includes Arizona, Seton Hall, Kansas and Miami. "I'll probably make my decision around July," says Wright, who is averaging 21.6 points and six rebounds per game this season. "I've known [Missouri] coach [Quinn] Snyder since he was at Duke and I enjoy the way his teams play, and I know players at Tennessee and they say it's a good program."
Tidbits Brentwood Academy (Tenn.) senior David Harrison watched his older brother play against Kansas this past weekend as part of an official visit to Colorado. The 7-footer is also looking at Vanderbilt, where his father is an assistant football coach, as well as North Carolina and Kentucky. ... Lee High (Ala.) junior point guard Chad Moore has Indiana, Duke, North Carolina and Auburn as his leaders. ... St. Bernard's High (La.) 6-foot-3 combo guard Drionne Major is debating between Oklahoma, Tulane and New Orleans. He plans to visit all three schools and then make his decision. Major is averaging 29 points per game this season. ... Most of the elite senior girls' basketball players have already decided where they will play college ball, but Alexandria Hayfield High (Va.) 5-foot-9 guard Anesia Smith hasn't made up her mind. Smith, who is averaging 20 points per game, is looking at Arkansas, Seton Hall, Georgetown and UMass. ... Villa Park High (Calif.) 6-foot-10 junior Martin Iti, an Australia native who is ineligible to play this season, has reportedly committed to USC, according to The Orange County Register.
