National Coaches of the Year

FOOTBALL
Mike Pettine - Central Bucks West High (Doylestown, Pa.)
Pettine, head football coach for 33 years at Central Bucks West, won his last 45 games as his final three teams won Class 4A state titles. Pettine, who retired at the conclusion of the '99 season, finished his career with a jaw-dropping 326-42-4 record. In a remarkable send-off season, the Bucks went 15-0, claimed the state title with a 14-13 win over Erie Cathedral Prep and finished with a No. 3 national ranking. Pettine's career record ties him for 11th in all-time wins nationwide, and his .882 winning percentage ranks him second among U.S. high school coaches with at least 300 victories.

BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY
Joe Newton - York High (Elmhurst, Ill.)
Newton, the boys' cross country and track coach at York for 44 seasons and counting, led the Dukes to their 20th state cross country title since 1961 last fall. Newton's dedication to his athletes and the sport includes 12-hour days during the week and eight hours on Saturday during the cross country and track seasons, which span nearly the entire school year. In December of '98, Newton, 70, was inducted into the National Track Coaches Hall of Fame in Orlando, Fla., and last fall the town of Elmhurst dedicated the north field of East End Park in his name.

GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY
Steve Telaneus - Marcus High (Flower Mound, Texas)
Telaneus has taken the Marauders to the state meet for 12 years running, winning the Class 5A state title in 1996 and '99. Telaneus has also found enough time to qualify the Marcus boys for states in eight of 10 seasons in the '90s, including third-place finishes in both 1997 and '98.

BOYS' SOCCER
Bunky Colvin - McIntosh High (Peachtree, Ga.)
McIntosh striker Matt Clements won the state scoring title with 36 goals and 15 assists last fall, but made no bones about why his super season came together or how the Chiefs constructed a 21-2 AAAA state championship season. Clements credits first-year coach Colvin as, "The most motivational and inspirational coach I've ever met."

GIRLS' SOCCER
Joe Moreau - St. Charles High (St. Charles, Ill.)
Despite losing the first two games of the 2000 season, the St. Charles girls' soccer team rebounded to capture the state championship earlier this month under Moreau with a 2-1 victory over Lincoln-Way High (New Lenox, Ill.). The 20-2-2 campaign marked the Saints' fifth title in a row and eighth since 1990, while the team finished 10th in the NSCAA/adidas spring girls' soccer rankings.

FIELD HOCKEY
Linda Nixon - Springfield Township High (Erdenhein, Pa.)
After being knocked out in the first round of the District 1 field hockey playoffs in 1998, 33-year veteran coach Nixon regrouped the Springfield Township field hockey team and led it to the '99 District 1, Class AA championship. The Spartans hadn't won a district title since 1993 before last fall's 17-4-2 campaign.

BOYS' BASKETBALL
Otis Russell - Dominguez High (Compton, Calif.)
Dominguez went 35-2 to win its second consecutive Division II state title under Russell. The Dons closed out the season with 28 straight wins to finish No. 1 in the SchoolSports.com Top 25 rankings.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL
James Anderson - Narbonne High (Harbor City, Calif.)
Narbonne capped a perfect season with a 64-52 win over Berkeley High (Berkeley, Calif.) in the Division I state championship game. The Gauchos' 34-0 season gave them 44 straight wins under Anderson, and the top spot in the SchoolSports.com Top 25 rankings.

SWIMMING
Pete Loporchio - Crescenta Valley High (La Crescenta, Calif.) Though he retired from coaching after this past season, Loporchio, 39, will always be a California coaching legend. Loporchio recently guided the Crescenta Valley boys' team to a third straight California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division II championship, the team's fourth overall. In eight seasons with the Falcons, Loporchio's swim teams compiled an incredible 79-1-1 dual meet record, including a six-year unbeaten stretch (69-0) from 1993-98. The Falcons never lost a Pacific League dual meet with Loporchio at the helm and, not surprisingly, won eight consecutive Pacific crowns. Loporchio also led the school's water polo team to the CIF finals this year and a 120-43 record in his career.

ICE HOCKEY
Bill Hanson - Catholic Memorial High (Boston, Mass.)
For the third year in a row and the eighth time in 10 years, Hanson guided Catholic Memorial to the elite Massachusetts Division 1A state tournament. The Knights (20-1-1) blew through the round-robin Super 8 tournament, posting a 4-0 record and outscoring their opponents by a combined 23-4 score to capture the state title.

WRESTLING
Jeff Buxton - Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.)
Blair Academy posted an 18-1 record under 17-year head coach Buxton and won the state prep school crown in February. The Buccaneers were the winningest high school team of the '90s, capturing all 10 of the decade's national prep wrestling titles as part of 20 in a row through this season.

SOFTBALL
Joe Gonzales - Foothill High (Santa Ana, Calif.)
Gonzales stewarded Foothill through the pressure of being tabbed by many observers as the nation's preseason No. 1. The Knights (33-2) beat rival and national No. 2 Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.), 1-0, earlier this month to win the SchoolSports.com national crown and the program's first California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division I championship since 1992.

BASEBALL
Dennis Barth - Gloucester Catholic High (Gloucester City, N.J.)
Barth benefited from the presence of seven Division I signees, as Gloucester Catholic rolled to a 33-1 record and the SchoolSports.com national title. With the upper levels of the Top 25 dominated by Florida and California teams, the Rams routed Seton Hall Prep (N.J.), 13-4, in the Parochial A state finals following an 11-0 laugher in the semis.

BOYS' LACROSSE
Joe Cuozzo - Ward Melville High (East Setauket, N.Y.)
When Ward Melville defeated Commack High (N.Y.) on May 12, it was a milestone for 32-year head coach Cuozzo. The victory marked the 600th win of his career. Cuozzo, the winningest coach in national high school lacrosse history, has guided the Patriots to 29 league championships, 21 county championships, 14 Long Island championships and six state championships. This spring, Cuozzo led his squad to a perfect 16-0 regular-season mark.

GIRLS' LACROSSE
Chris Robinson - Mount Hebron High (Ellicott City, Md.)
Robinson led Mount Hebron to its fourth consecutive state title thanks to a 16-4 win over Glenelg High (Md.) in the Class 1A-2A-3A championship. Mount Hebron rolled to a 19-0 record, outscoring its opponents by a whopping 394-87 margin. Only two teams came within five goals of the Vikings. Mount Hebron has now won 50 straight games dating back to 1998 and has appeared in every state final since 1992.

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL
Maria DiClemente - Cambridge Rindge & Latin School (Cambridge, Mass.)
It's one thing to lead a volleyball team to a state title in California, the land of year-round players and 6-foot-10 middle blockers. It's quite another to lead a boys' squad to a 25-0 record and a state title in Massachusetts, where players must bond into a cohesive unit within the framework of a two-week preseason. But DiClemente did just that, guiding the Falcons to a flawless 2000 campaign this spring.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL
Larry Trupe - Torrey Pines High (Encinitas, Calif.)
Torrey Pines has regained its status as Southern California's top dog under Trupe, winning the California Interscholastic Federation's San Diego Section Division I girls' volleyball title for the second year in a row. It marked the Falcons' first back-to-back championships since their six-year reign from 1990-95.

BOYS' TRACK
Richard Gatlin - Gardena Serra High (Gardena, Calif.)
Gardena Serra finished second in the Del Ray League with a 6-1 dual-meet record under Gatlin. The team's only loss came to league champion Don Bosco Tech. But the Conquistadors rebounded to win the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division IV title, then capture the school's first statewide crown at the state track and field championships, racking up 38 points to runner-up Long Beach Poly High's 24.

GIRLS' TRACK
Larry Colbert - Eleanor Roosevelt High (Greenbelt, Md.)
At the Maryland state track and field championships, the Eleanor Roosevelt girls' team took home its fifth straight Class 4A title under Colbert. Twice earlier this season, Eleanor Roosevelt had lost to Largo High (Md.) in the 4-x-100-meter relay, but Colbert shuffled the Raiders' quartet before the state meet to earn decisive first-place points in the event. Colbert began coaching track at Eleanor Roosevelt in 1989. Since then, he estimates he has sent close to 100 students to college on athletic scholarships.
