Bryant picks Missouri By Kyle Melinn SchoolSports.com | ||||||
Travon Bryant put an end to the guessing on Tuesday. The David Starr Jordan High (Long Beach, Calif.) boys' basketball standout says he is going to the University of Missouri. In front of his high school coach Ron Massey, a few Jordan High administrators and some members of the local media, Bryant said he is headed to Columbia, Mo., this fall to play for Quin Snyder and the Tigers of the Big 12 Conference. "He feels it's a good decision and I think it's a good decision," says Massey. "He's going to be successful wherever he goes."
"At first it was really exciting. Coaches were calling you at home, you think you're something special," says Bryant. "You keep 'em guessing, say you're not sure where you're going to go to school. Now it's becoming a hassle. It's frustrating." But on Tuesday, Bryant signed a letter of intent to go to Missouri, saying he liked the idea of going to a small community and playing for a personal person like Snyder, who was named the 1999-2000 National Rookie Coach of the Year by the Basketball Times. Bryant has said he wanted to attend a school with good programs in communications and sports medicine. The University of Missouri's communication program is one of the nation's best. "I like the (Missouri) staff," Bryant told the Kansas City Star, "and I like the players who are coming in with their recruiting class." Says Massey, "The coaching tactics and techniques are similar to what he's been around the last four years. It's going to make things easier for him." Bryant is a 6-foot-7, 235-pound forward who averaged 23 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots per game as a senior. The left hander's ability to score from the inside and outside helped earn him 3rd team All-American honors by Parade Magazine and a finalist honor for SchoolSports.com's Player of the Year. "We're very excited to have Travon join the Missouri program," says Snyder, who guided the Tigers to an 18-13 season last year and a NCAA tournament birth. "Obviously, with the multitude of accolades, he's an outstanding basketball talent. Travon has an exceptional feel for the game in addition to his impressive array of basketball skills. "We see Travon as an impact player with the potential to be a leader for our program. He comes from a wonderful family and we welcome him to our family at Missouri." Bryant's brother, D'Cean plays basketball for Long Beach State. He lives with his mother Sabra Bryant in Long Beach.
