National Girls' Basketball Top 25



1. Buena HS (Ventura, Calif.) - (12-0) *1
Last week: In Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, beat Archbishop Mitty, 65-46, in semifinals; beat Redondo Union, 69-32, in finals.
Outlook: Redondo Union won the Southern Section, Division II-AA championship last year and is ranked in the Top Five of the Los Angeles Top 10, but they simply could not complete with Buena. Kelly Greathouse and the girls had the score, 30-4, in start the game. Ouch. Greathouse averaged 22 points in four games to earn tournament MVP honors. Her best game was against San Jose power Archbishop Mitty when she scored 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

2. Christ the King HS (Middle Village, N.Y.) - (8-0) *2
Last week: Idle

3. Fenwick HS (Oak Park, Ill.) - (9-0) *5
Last week: Beat Streamwood High, 62-25; Defeated Regina High, 47-32.
Outlook: After a week of rest, the Friars got back to action Tuesday afternoon with a 62-25 triumph over Streamwood High in the opening round of the Dundee-Crown Christmas tournament. Erin Lawless led Fenwick with 22 points against Streamwood, while Sarah Kwasinski had nine rebounds, eight points, four assists and four blocked shots in a winning effort. Lawless led the Friars with 20 points, six rebounds and two blocks vs. Regina.

4. Ben Davis HS (Indianapolis, Ind.) - (7-1) *7
Last week: Idle

5. Narbonne HS (Harbor City, Calif.) - (8-1) *8
Last week: Beat Hanford High (Calif.), 54-52, in the finals of the Nike Tournament of Champions (Ill.); Defeated Mountain View High (Utah), 54-47 in the semifinals.
Outlook: Loree Moore had 17 points and grabbed seven boards in the win over Mountain View, and added 10 points, four rebounds, six assists and four steals in the title game. Wilnett Crockett earned tourney MVP honors and scored 16 points and hauled down seven boards in the championship victory.

6. Mountain View HS (Orem, Utah) - (8-1) *3
Last week: Lost to Narbonne High (Calif.), 54-47, in the Nike Tournament of Champions (Ill.); Beat Germantown (Pa.) Academy in the third-place game, 62-53.
Outlook: Danielle Chessman scored 25 points in the loss to Narbonne.

7. Ft. Lauderdale HS (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) - (13-0) *9
Last week: The Flying L's swept through the Kreul Classic last week, winning the title in the final with a win over Dunbar (Kent.), 51-49.
Outlook: The title at the Kreul Classic was the second straight for the Flying L's.

8. Hanford HS (Hanford, Calif.) - (6-2) *10
Last week: Lost to Narbonne High (Calif.), 54-52, in the finals of the Nike Tournament of Champions; Beat Germantown Academy (Pa.) in the semifinals, 53-44.
Outlook: Senior guard Amy Parrish led the team with 14 points against Germantown while center Shawntinice Polk added 13 points and 12 boards. Polk fouled out with 2:24 left in the title game and finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

9. Highlands Ranch HS (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) - (7-1) *11
Last week: Beat Heritage High, 56-50, to win the championship of the Holiday Hoopla Tournament; Defeated Chatfield, 68-51; Edged Rocky Mountain High, 70-61.
Upcoming: Jan. 6 at Montbello Christian School.
Outlook: Katy Flecky scored 21 points, while Heritage-transfer Ann Strother added 18, in the title victory over Heritage. Strother was named MVP after adding 26 against Chatfield, and 32 in a first-round win over Rocky Mountain High.

10. South Sioux City HS (South Sioux City, Neb.) - (6-1) *12
Last week: Beat Berkeley High (Calif.), 65-51, and North Atlanta High (Ga.) at the Nike Tournament of Champions.
Outlook: Katie Robinette, a 6-foot-2 senior, scored 17 points and grabbed 13 boards, while Jenni Flynn had 16 points and 11 rebounds against Berkeley.

11. Red Bank Catholic HS (Red Bank, N.J.) - (3-0) *13
Last week: Crushed St. Mary's, 79-22, in the Casey Holiday Festival.
Outlook: Jessica DePolo scored 17 and Kelli Talbot added 12 in the win over St. Mary's.

12. St. Pius HS (Milwaukee, Wis.) - (6-0) *14
Last week: Beat Madison West High, 79-42.
Upcoming: Dec. 26 at Mukwanago High; Dec. 28 at Sheldon High (Ore.)
Outlook: Christine Gutierrez, Shawna Nichols and Liz Chudy each scored 12 first-half points in the win over Madison West.

13. Cedar Falls HS (Cedar Falls, Iowa) - (7-0) *16
Last week: Beat Ankely High, 63-47.

14. Mansfield HS (Mansfield, Texas) - (15-1) *17
Results: Defeated Cedar Hill, 52-31.
Outlook: The Lady Tigers rolled to their 52nd straight district win, by dismantling Cedar Hill. Mansfield scored the first 14 points of the game and never looked back. Brie Madden led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds.

15. Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, Pa.) - (12-2) *4
Last Week: Lost to Hanford (Calif.), 53-44, in the Nike Tournament of Champions; Lost to Mountain View (Utah), 62-53; Beat Archbishop Prendergast, 62-32, to win Make a Wish Shootout.
Outlook: Gillian Goring managed just seven points and four boards in the loss to Hanford, but responded with 21 points against Mountain View.

16. Riverdale Baptist School (Upper Marlboro, Md.) - (6-1) *NR
Last week: Beat Marshall High (Ill.), 62-59, in the Nike Tournament of Champions (Ill.); Defeated Nashua High (N.H.), 54-42, in the ninth-place game.
Outlook: Tiffany Stansbury scored 15 in the win over Marshall.

17. Fort Smith Northside HS (Fort Smith, Ark.) - (6-1) *20
Last week: Idle.

18. Shelbyville Central HS (Shelbyville, Tenn.) - (10-1) *21

Upcoming: Jan. 9 vs. Clinton.
Outlook: Kala Bowers and Melissa Hobbs each scored 15 in the win over Dodge City. Bowers poured in 28 and Hobbs added 21 vs. Clinton, while Bowers led the team with 14 points against Elk City.

20. Fort Collins HS (Fort Collins, Colo.) - (5-1) *24

Upcoming: Jan. 5 at Rocky Mountain High.

21. Mason HS (Mason, Ohio) - (6-2) *6
Last week: Lost to Joan Overton High, 66-63, in the Nashville Classic; Beat Canton McKinley High, 60-45, in the Mason Holiday Classic.
Outlook: All-State player and Tennessee-bound 6-foot-1 center Michelle Munoz scored 33 in the losing effort against Joan Overton High and managed 22 points and 13 boards in the win over Canton McKiney.

22. Marshall HS (Chicago, Ill.) - (10-2) *15
Last week: Lost to Riverdale Baptist High (Md.), 62-59, at the Nike Tournament of Champions; Beat Bellevue High (Wash.), 50-39, in the 11th-place game.
Outlook: Cappie Pondexter poured in 35 points against Riverdale Baptist and scored 24 points vs. Bellevue. She finished with 132 points in four tournament games. Marshall head coach Dorothy Gaters picked up her 697th career win with the 50-39 triumph over Bellevue.

23. Nashua HS (Nashua, N.H.) - (3-2) *18
Last week: Beat Bellevue High (Wash.), 60-50, in the Nike Tournament of Champions (Ill.); Lost to Riverdale Baptist (Md.), 54-42, in the 9th-place game.
Outlook: Lauren Moore scored 15 in the win over Bellevue and Merann Whitney led the team with 16 points.

24. North Atlanta HS (Atlanta, Ga.) - (8-2) *19
Last week: Beat Upperman High (Tenn.), 59-39, in the Nike Tournament of Champions; Lost to South Sioux City (Iowa), 66-59, in the fifth-place game.
Outlook: The Warriors return home to battle a good blend of local and out-of-state competition in the Nike/Peach State Classic. North Atlanta opens against Bradwell Institue on Dec. 27. Amongst the tougher competition in the tournament field is Ft. Lauderdale High (Fla.) and Miami Edison High (Fla.).

25. Elizabeth Seton HS (Bladensburg, Md.) - (6-1) *25
Last week: Idle

Team to Watch:

Council Rock High (Newton, Pa.) - (12-0) *NR
Last Week: Won the Nike Tournament of Champions, beating Briar Crest (Tenn.) 56-52 in the finals. Outlook: Julie Sailer was named Nike Tournament of Champions Blue Division MVP after averaging 20 points a game in the four-game tourney. "Our coach told us to send a message that Council Rock is a strong program," Sailer said.

Dropped out:

Monsignor Pace HS (Miami, Fla.) - (11-2) *22
Last week: Lost to Shanks High; Won first two games to reach the semifinals at the 11th Annual Closetmaid-Don Kelso State Farm Forest Ladycat Tournament.
