Big Men Duel to a Draw

LEWES, Del. -- Memo to Tyson Chandler and Ousmane Cisse: Say no way to the NBA.

The two big men, who have both been rumored to be leaning towards bypassing college, battled to a near draw in the individual matchup, but Chandler's Dominguez High (Calif.) team came out on top, 61-50, over St. Jude (Ala.) on Thursday night at the Slam Dunk to the Beach tournament.

Dominguez High (Calif.) center Tyson Chandler battled fellow big man Ousmane Cisse (Ala.) to a draw at the Slam Dunk to the Beach tournament.
The 7-foot Chandler and the 6-foot-9 Cisse were each in foul trouble and both showed they are far more adept on the defensive end of the floor throughout the contest. But it was Chandler, who picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter, who was still on the floor as the buzzer sounded while Cisse fouled out with 1:31 remaining and his team trailing by five points.

It wasn't the first time the pair went up against one another. Cisse, a native of Mali who already has an NBA body at 250 pounds, got the better of Chandler at last year's Nike camp and has emerged, along with Chandler and Thornwood High (Ill.) mammoth center Eddy Curry, as the top high school players in the nation.

Neither Chandler nor Cisse admitted to being overly excited or nervous about the game, but both players appeared more intense than usual at the outset in front of the packed house of 3,000-plus fans that featured a bevy of NBA scouts and college coaches, including Duke head man Mike Krzyzewski.

Chandler was just 1-of-3 in the first half, with his one field goal coming on a dunk. He finished the game with 14 points, eight rebounds and six blocks in 22 minutes. Cisse was far more aggressive on both ends of the floor and had 17 points, six boards and four blocks in 28 minutes.

"My objective is to win the game," said Chandler after the victory. "It isn't about individual matchups. I played OK, but could have played better. I wish I would have gotten the ball more, but that's just how it goes.

St. Jude High (Ala.) power forward Ousmane Cisse is one of four high school big men still considering a jump to the NBA.
"He's (Cisse) real athletic and strong and plays like a beast."

Cisse displayed a tough, physical style and showed intensity and aggressiveness on both ends of the court, although at times he looked lost on the offensive end. He badly missed a one-handed hook from the right baseline in the first half, but connected on the same shot from the opposite side of the baseline early in the second half. He was off on both of his three-point attempts during the contest.

"I wasn't nervous, but I just made a couple of mistakes," said Cisse, who had to sit out all of his junior campaign last season because of Alabama's state transfer rules. "It was a fun game, but I don't like to lose."

It was Chandler who opened the game with the one-on-one defensive assignment on Cisse while St. Jude coach Harry Scott decided to employ a zone defense on the Dominguez big man. Chandler tried to shoot a pair of 3-pointers over the zone, but came up short on both of his long-distance attempts. He finished the game taking only eight shots from the field, and knocking down five of them. However, he had four points in the game's waning minute on alley-oops from Dons junior forward Bobby Jones (13 points, six rebounds).

Although Chandler wasn't overly aggressive, Cisse said the 225-pound senior has gotten stronger since their last matchup.

"Tyson is deceptive because he might be on the skinny side and look frail, but he's so strong and quick and has such a big heart," said Dominguez coach Steve Singleton. "We ended up winning the game, so I guess Tyson won the matchup."
