Point Break Wagner, considered the nation's top players under 6-foot-6, was allegedly involved in a fight outside the principal's office last Friday at Camden High (N.J.). The 17-year-old Wagner, along with two other players, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. All of those involved in the altercation, including the alleged victim, were suspended for five days.
Hargett, the well-traveled, undersized high-riser who recently transferred to National Christian Academy (Va.) after Emmanuel Christian Academy (N.C.) was forced to close its doors because of financial problems, will be out of action for about a month. The 5-foot-11 point guard, who committed to West Virginia University just days after arriving at National Christian, had surgery Tuesday to repair a hernia. Hargett has been targeting the University of Arizona, Tennessee and LSU, but his reputation as a tough player to deal with may have cost him scholarship offers at those schools and other big-time programs. And finally, Miles watched Rainer Beach High (Wash.) twins Rodrick and Lodrick Stewart light it up for 41 combined points against his Jefferson High (Ore.) squad last week to end the Democrats' 31-game winning streak. Miles managed 16 points and Michael Lee led Jefferson with 28, but it wasn't enough, as Jefferson dropped to 1-1 on the season.
Movers and Shakers Thomas, along with Hargett, attended Emmanuel Academy before the school had to shut down two months ago and the players had to scramble quickly to find new schools and remain eligible for the basketball season. Thomas chose the Hoyas over UConn, Seton Hall, Maryland and Kentucky. But Montrose Christian wasn't the only nationally ranked boys' team to suffer a loss in terms of personnel. DeMatha Catholic High (Md.) 6-foot-2 junior guard Marshall Strickland left the school shortly after being benched by Hall of Fame coach Morgan Wooten during a 60-54 victory over Friendly High (Md.) last week and has resurfaced at South Carroll High (Md.). South Carroll is 1-1 this season after going 10-12 last year. Strickland, who tallied 15 points and five assists in a season-opening victory over Archbishop John Carroll High (Md.), transferred from Winchendon Prep (Mass.) to DeMatha prior to this season, and reports had him doing extremely well academically at DeMatha. Strickland's loss was the third since the end of last season for DeMatha's boys' hoops program. Point guard and leading scorer Billy Edelin took off for No. 1 Oak Hill Academy (Va.) and is flourishing under coach Steve Smith. Then last month, senior guard Maurice Carter left for Eleanor Roosevelt High (Md.).
In the Spotlight The 6-foot guard was then arraigned on misdemeanor charges of assault and marijuana possession just three days later.
Mammoth Matchup Both players finished with 16 points, and Chandler's Dominguez team won the game, 54-50, in the KMOX Shootout in St. Louis, Mo. Curry was just 5-for-18 from the field and grabbed six boards before fouling out late in the game, while Chandler hit seven of his 10 field goals and also scored 16.
Slam Dunks Kelvin Torbert, a guard from Flint Northwestern High (Mich.) who has signed with Michigan State, broke Trent Tucker's school-record record of 49 points when he scored 50 against Flint Southwestern High last week. ... Seattle SuperSonics forward Rashard Lewis will have his number retired at Alief Elsik High (Texas) prior to the team's Dec. 28 home game. ... Ferris High (Wash.) boys' basketball coach Wayne Gilman picked up his 500th victory on Tuesday. He is 500-272 in 32 years of coaching and reached the milestone in a 105-50 rout of North Central High. ... McComb High (Miss.) sophomore center Jackie Butler scored 44 points, hauled down 24 boards and swatted five shots in an 80-76 overtime win over Jackson Wingfield High on Tuesday. Butler was 21-for-24 from the field, but just a Shaq-like 2-for-8 from the charity stripe. ... Clarkrange High's (Tenn.) Lamar Rogers became the 13th high school girls' basketball coach ever to win 700 games with a 67-54 win over Pickett County High this week. Rogers is 700-130 with six state crowns in 25 seasons. ... One of the top two-sport stars in the nation, Boca Raton Pope John Paul High's (Fla.) Charles Frederick, has verbally committed to Washington over Florida State, Tennessee, Miami and Auburn. The point guard/wide receiver will attend Washington on a football scholarship but may end up playing basketball as well.
Airballs The Highlands Ranch High (Colo.) girls' basketball team was poised to move into the No. 1 spot after Ben Davis High (Ind.) lost earlier in the week. But without the services of Notre Dame-bound Katy Flecky, Ranch lost to Fort Collins High, 49-28. Flecky, last year's Ms. Basketball in Colorado, was suspended for one game for violating a school academic rule. ... Lamar High (Texas) big man Lawrence Roberts injured his knee jumping over a ditch and missed a recent loss to Hastings High. ... The Elyria First Baptist Christian School (Ohio) boys' hoop team tossed a shutout against Orange Christian School, 53-0, earlier this week. The Sabres, who improved to 3-1 on the year, led 31-0 at halftime.
