Northeast Winooski High's (Vt.) 61-game losing streak in girls' basketball is history after freshman Bobbi Robare scored 23 points to help give the team its first victory since Feb. 5, 1997, with a 44-35 win over Cabot High on Monday night. Coach Pete Nattress shaved off his 20-year-old beard in honor of the occasion. ... Christina Dooling set a Hamilton High (N.J.) school record in the 50-meter freestyle in an 89-81 victory over South Brunswick High earlier this week. The sophomore, who also won the 100-meter butterfly and was on the 400-meter freestyle relay team, finished the 50 free in 29.03 seconds. ... Gilbert High (W. Va.) football coach Gordon Carter resigned after 12 seasons with team because of the attitudes of many of his players. Carter finished with a 100-39 mark at Gilbert, including a Class A state title in 1995. He will remain the assistant basketball coach at Gilbert and may coach football at a different school. "To walk in that dressing room up at Cameron and see kids laughing and carrying on after getting our tails whipped, that didn't inspire me a whole lot," Carter told the Associated Press. "I don't like to lose, and I think the program over here is headed in that direction and I don't want to be a part of it."
Southeast Etowah High (Ala.) star running back Carnell Williams won the state's "Mr. Football" award from the Alabama Sports Writer's Association. Williams rushed for 1,739 yards and 23 touchdowns this season and averaged more than 10 yards per carry. ... South Broward High (Fla.) football coach Antonio Williams was fired after posting a three-year record of 15-14, including 5-5 marks each of the past two seasons. Williams was asked to resign, but he declined and was let go by the administration. Williams is a 1985 graduate of South Broward, where he played both football and basketball.
Midwest High school basketball fans in the Chicago area will get an early Christmas present on Friday, when the city's two best point guards square off. Julian High junior Sean Dockery, who has already attracted the interest of most major college programs, is set to face Crane High senior Will Bynum. The two provided some sparks at the recently completed BlueCross BlueShield Classic at the UIC Pavilion, where Dockery tossed in 18 points (to go along with 11 steals and sevens assists) in a 60-52 win over Joliet High. Not to be outdone, Bynum, who is already committed to play for Arizona next fall, led Crane to a 74-70 win over Peoria Richwoods High with a 30-point performance of his own.
Southwest Peoria Sunrise Mountain High (Ariz.) pitcher/shortstop Matt Leaf has committed to Arizona State. Last season, he hit .435 with 40 RBI while going 7-3 with a 1.48 ERA on the mound.
West Canyon High (Calif.) football coach Jack Bowman resigned after a pair of lackluster seasons in which his team went 8-14. Bowman enjoyed success at rival Saugus High, where he went 36-26-2 from 1991-96, but was just 4-6 this past season and couldn't lead the Cowboys to the postseason. ... The father and uncle of a Torrance South High (Calif.) football player have been sentenced to 45 days in jail for attacking the boy's coach after a game because of a lack of playing time. John Martinez, 34, and his brother, Anthony Martinez, 23, allegedly assaulted football coach Brett Peabody because Martinez's son, John Martinez Jr., wasn't getting near the amount of carries he received during his junior season. The judge also imposed fines and three years probation for the men.
