Mauer Wins Gatorade National Award

Cretin-Derham Hall (Minn.) quarterback Joe Mauer didn't win a state title in his senior season, but he did claim the prestigious Gatorade National High School Football Player of the Year Award on Thursday.

Mauer, who threw for 3,022 yards and 41 touchdowns this season, has a 3.26 GPA and still hasn't decided where he will attend college next year. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Mauer is also a projected first-round pick in baseball and is looking for the best school that will allow him to play both sports. His finalists are Florida State, Miami, Minnesota and Arizona.

Mauer led the Raiders to a 13-0 mark and a state crown as a junior, but the team lost to Eden Prairie High, 21-14, in the title game last month.

Cretin-Derham Hall becomes the first school to have two players receive the award since its inception in 1985, when Jeff George claimed the honor. Former Cretin-Derham Hall quarterback Chris Walsh won the award in 1991. The school also has an alumni list that includes former NFL QB Steve Walsh and Heisman Trophy finalist Chris Weinke, the starting signal-caller for Florida State this season.

Other winners of the Gatorade award, which also uses academic excellence as a criterion, include current NFL stars Emmitt Smith, Peyton Manning, Tim Couch and Robert Smith.
