National Girls' Basketball Top 25



1. Ben Davis HS (Indianapolis, Ind.) -- (4-0) *1
Last week: Defeated Ron Calli High, 65-35, Brownsburg High, 59-38, Lawrence North High, 41-38, and Park Tudor High, 78-31.
Upcoming: Dec. 7 vs. Brebauf High in the Marion County Tournament
Outlook: Tennessee-bound forward Shyra Ely is averaging 15 points per game, but she managed just four points in the victory over Lawrence North. Ashley Allen is averaging 12.5 ppg so far.

2. Highlands Ranch HS (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) -- (0-0) *2
Last week: Idle
Upcoming: Dec. 5 at Chatfield High and Dec. 8 at Coronado High
Outlook: Ms. Basketball Katy Flecky & Co. kicked off the season with a road game against Chatfield on Tuesday night, followed by a trip to Coronado on Friday night.
North Atlanta High
The North Atlanta High (Ga.) girls' hoop team moved up from No. 18 to No. 15 this week after starting the season 2-0.

3. Buena HS (Ventura, Calif.) -- (1-0) *3
Last week: Beat Agoura High, 60-48.
Upcoming: Buena Tournament
Outlook: Even without Division I prospects Kelly Greathouse (knee) and Courtney LaVere (flu), Buena still beat Agoura by 12. Courtney Young carried the load for Joe Vaughn's team, scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the win. The Bulldogs host their own tournament this week to really get thing rolling.

4. Christ the King HS (Middle Village, N.Y.) -- (1-0) *5
Last week: Beat Mary Lewis High.
Upcoming: Dec. 5 vs. St. Saviour High
Outlook: All is well for the Royals, who started the season with a win over Mary Lewis. Star point guard Clare Droesch will have plenty of help this season, especially from impressive junior guard CiGi McCollin.

5. Narbonne HS (Harbor City, Calif.) -- (0-0) *7
Last week: Idle
Upcoming: Opens season at Brea Olinda Tournament
Outlook: The retooled Lady Gauchos look to defend their state title, but coach James Anderson and his team have two tough tournaments to open the season. After the Brea Olinda Tournament, Narbonne flies to Chicago for the Nike Tournament of Champions, where the Lady Gauchos will fish or cut bait with the nation's best.

6. Mountain View HS (Orem, Utah) -- (2-0) *8
Last week: Beat Carbon High, 58-27, and Riverton High, 60-29.
Upcoming: Dec. 7 vs. Copper Hill High
Outlook: Danielle Chessman is averaging 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks per contest. Tuesday's game was postponed because of state teachers' strike.

7. South Sioux City HS (South Sioux City, Neb.) -- (2-0) *10
Last week: Beat Rolston High, 104-42, and defeated Beatrice High, 97-66, in the finals of the River City Conference Tournament.
Upcoming: Dec. 7 vs. Sioux City West High
Outlook: Katie Robinette averaged 22.5 ppg and 11.5 rpg over the first two games, while 6-foot-3 sophomore Jane Horkey is averaging 17 ppg and 10.5 rpg. Sophomore Jenni Flynn leads the team with 12 assists and 11 steals.

8. Fenwick HS (Oak Park, Ill.) -- (6-0) *11
Last week: Beat Naperville North High, 57-37.
Upcoming: Not available
Outlook: The top-ranked team in Chicago had little trouble rolling over the competition at a Thanksgiving tournament in Waubonsie Valley late last month. The Friars used standout performances from their frontcourt throughout the tourney, as Sarah Kwasinski (16 points, six rebounds), Erin Lawless (10 points, four rebounds) and Claudette Towers (six points) led the way in a 57-37 win over Naperville North in the tournament championship game.

9. Hanford HS (Hanford, Calif.) -- (2-0) *12
Last week: Beat Canyon Springs High, 93-57, and Mareno Valley High, 59-57.
Upcoming: Dec. 8 vs. the Ayala High-Redondo Union High winner
Outlook: Star center Shawntinice Polk was slowed by an ankle injury, but Amy Parrish scored 33 points in the win over Canyon Springs and Tara Chenault hit two key free throws down the stretch in the victory against Mareno Valley.

10. Nashua HS (Nashua, N.H.) -- (0-0) *14
Last week: Idle
Upcoming: Dec. 15 at Londenberry High
Outlook: It's not often that Class L hoops gets much press south of the Merrimack River, but Nashua can ball, led by Liz Dancause in the post. Nashua has won 21 straight games and returns four starters from last year's Class L state championship club.

11. Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, Pa.) -- (1-0) *15
Last week: Defeated St. Hubert's High, 62-28.
Upcoming: Dec. 7 at Nazareth High
Outlook: Gillian Goring is only a junior, but the 6-foot-7 center is considered by some to be the nation's best player. Erin Osborn and Joanna Rhoades complement Goring on a team that is a threat to win the state title this season and a national title next season. Opened the season with a win over St. Hubert's.

12. Mason HS (Mason, Ohio) -- (2-0) *13
Last week: Beat Turpin High, 62-31, and Anderson High, 61-24.
Upcoming: Dec. 7 at Winton Woods High
Outlook: All-state player Michelle Munoz scored 26 points in the win over Anderson.

13. Red Bank Catholic HS (Red Bank, N.J.) -- (0-0) *16
Last week: Idle
Upcoming: Dec. 15 at Long Branch High
Outlook: With all five starters returning, Red Bank looks like a lock to repeat as state champ. Jessica DePalo, a 6-foot-1 center, and 5-foot-7 Lynne Zoltowski form a nasty inside-outside combo.

14. Bullis School (Potomac, Md.) -- (0-0) *17
Last week: Idle
Upcoming: Dec. 5 vs. Elizabeth Seton High
Outlook: Pressure? There's no pressure for Bullis. At least that's what star forward Monique Currie is telling her teammates, who will collectively be wearing the bull's-eye this season. Last year, Bullis sneaked up on foes. This season, beginning with Elizabeth Seton, will be a different story. But Currie, who will play for Duke next year, is a special player.

15. North Atlanta HS (Atlanta, Ga.) -- (2-0) *18
Last week: Beat St. Pius X High, 64-44, and North Springs High, 67-50.
Upcoming: Dec. 9 at McNair High and Dec. 12 at Mays High
Outlook: The Warriors, last year's AAA state champions, opened the 2000-2001 campaign in convincing fashion by defeating North Springs and handing St. Pius X its first loss of the year.

16. Ft. Lauderdale HS (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) -- (6-0) *NR
Last week: Ft. Lauderdale's biggest win came over Dillard High on Dec. 4.
Upcoming: Dec. 8 vs. rival South Broward High
Outlook: Sandora Irvin has looked like a possible Player of the Year candidate in leading the team in scoring almost every night.

17. Woodward HS (Woodward, Okla.) -- (2-0) *20
Last week: Beat Amarillo Poloduro High (Texas), 82-43, and Weatherford High (Okla.), 68-26.
Upcoming: Dec. 8 at the Fort Smith Tournament of Champions in Arkansas
Outlook: Senior Kala Bowers, who has signed with Texas, scored 21 in both wins, while 6-foot junior Melissa Hobbs netted 17 in each game. Junior Lindsey Van Doren (6-foot-2) scored 14 against Amarillo and added nine points in the victory over Weatherford.

18. St. Pius HS (Milwaukee, Wis.) -- (3-0) *21
Last week: Beat Silverado High, 78-32, Bishop Gorman High, 55-50, and Waukesha West High, 58-23.
Upcoming: Dec. 8 vs. Kettle Moraine High
Outlook: Christine Gutierrez, who has great range, is averaging 16 points and eight rebounds per game, while University of Wisconsin-bound point guard Shawna Nicols is averaging 12 points and seven assists per contest.

19. Marshall HS (Chicago, Ill.) -- (4-0) *22
Last week: Beat Proviso West High, 60-44.
Upcoming: Dec. 7 vs. Manley High and Dec. 10 vs. Peoria Central High
Outlook: The incomparable Cappie Pondexter led the Commandos in their 60-44 win over Proviso West with 29 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal.

20. Mount Vernon HS (Alexandria, Va.) -- (1-0) *23
Last week: Beat West Potomac High, 76-39.
Upcoming: Dec. 8 vs. West Springfield High
Outlook: Lauren Troupe scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the victory over West Potomac.

21. Cedar Falls HS (Cedar Falls, Iowa) -- (3-0) *25
Last week: Beat Ankeny High, 60-41, Waterloo East High, 97-34, and West Des Moines Dowling High, 49-40.
Upcoming: Dec. 8 at Iowa City West High
Outlook: Senior 6-foot forward Ellie Peterson scored 25 points and hauled down 18 rebounds in the win over Dowling. Kim Hansen lit up Waterloo East for 30 points and added 15 points and nine boards against Dowling.

22. Monsignor Pace HS (Miami, Fla.) -- (6-0) *NR
Last week: Beat Carol City High, 70-20, and Booker T. Washington High, 83-20.
Upcoming:Dec. 9 vs. Archbishop Curley High and Dec. 13 vs. Jackson High
Outlook: Monsignor Pace breaks into the Top 25 this week after starting the season on fire at 6-0. Pace outscored two opponents 153-40 last week.

23. Mansfield HS (Mansfield, Texas) -- (8-1) *4
Last week: Beat Godley High and Nazareth High; lost to Canyon High, 53-49, in the finals of the Canyon Tournament.
Upcoming: Dec. 7 at Arlington Classic Tournament
Outlook: Mansfield has won and will continue to win by spreading the ball around. The team's leading scorer, Brie Southall, is only averaging 11.1 points per game, but the fourth-leading scorer, Erin Grant, is averaging nine points a game.

24. Fort Smith Northside HS (Fort Smith, Ark.) -- (3-1) *NR
Last week: Beat Mena High, Dardanelle High and then-No. 19 Shelbyville Central High (Tenn.), 78-69; lost to Briarcrest High.
Upcoming: Not available
Outlook: Juniors Redd Coleman and Tamika Kursh each scored 21 points, and Coleman's younger sister, Ashley, added 20 in the win over Shelbyville Central.

25. Central HS (Shelbyville, Tenn.) -- (5-1) *19
Last week: Beat Jackson County High, Crossville High, Marshall County High, White County High and Cumberland County High; lost to new No. 24 Fort Smith Northside High (Ark.), 78-69.
Upcoming: Dec. 8 vs. Lincoln County High and Dec. 9 vs. Jackson North Side High
Outlook: Vanderbilt-bound forward Abi Ramsey is averaging 22 points and eight rebounds per game, while Tynisha Alexander, who has signed with Tennessee Tech, is averaging 15.5 ppg. Central had its 29-game winning streak snapped with the loss to Fort Smith Northside.

Dropped out:
No. 6 Westview HS (Beaverton, Ore.) -- (0-2)
Lost to Centennial High, 38-35, and Lake Oswego High, 42-36.
Sisters Kim and Kara Braxton are both sitting out due to academics, and Angie Wells also missed Westview's first game.

No. 9 Edison HS (Miami, Fla.) -- (4-1)
Beat Cocoa Beach High, 53-41, on Dec. 1; lost to Titusville Astronaut High, 57-56, in overtime on Dec. 2; beat Central High, 77-51, on Dec. 4.
Edison's hopes for an undefeated regular season ended on a road trip to Titusville. Edison bounced back nicely for a win over Central, as Florence Williams scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

No. 24 Oakland Catholic HS (Pittsburgh, Pa.) -- (1-1)
Lost to Council Rock High (Pa.), 60-38.
