Ebell Breaks National Record By Rob Bodenburg SchoolSports.com | ||||||
At 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, it's easy to overlook Ventura High (Calif.) senior running back Tyler Ebell. But after his record-breaking performance this year, few people will ever forget about the diminutive back again. On Saturday, Ebell wrote his name into the high school record books, breaking the national single-season rushing record with a 307-yard performance against Lompoc High. That gave Ebell a 13-game total of 4,206 yards, shattering the 14-game record of 4,087 yards amassed by Travis Henry of Frostproof High (Fla.) in 1996.
And the scary part is that because Ventura won the game, 34-21, Ebell will have a chance to add to his record in the Southern Section Division IV finals this weekend against Arroyo Grande High. Interestingly, Ebell rushed for a season-high 393 yards in a 41-28 win over Arroyo Grande earlier this season. The UCLA-bound Ebell has been amazingly consistent this season. He has rushed for more than 300 yards in 10 of 13 games and hasn't been held below 200 yards in any contest. The senior's touchdown total is also astounding. With five trips to the end zone against Lompoc on Saturday, Ebell brought his season total to 61 touchdowns, breaking the California single-season record of 59 TDs set by Tustin High's DeShaun Foster in 1997. The national single-season touchdown record is 66, set by Brett Law of Sheridan High (Ind.) in 1988. And if Ebell can reproduce his six-touchdown performance against Arroyo Grande earlier this year, he will also own that record after this coming weekend.
