National Football Top 25

1. De La Salle HS (Concord, Calif.) -- (13-0) *1 Last week: Beat San Leandro High, 49-13, in North Coast Section Class 4A finals. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Meet your 2000 national champions. Although there are still playoff games to be played in some states, De La Salle wrapped up Kevin Simon helped lead No. 1 De La Salle (Calif.) to a perfect 13-0 record this season. its season with a 49-13 win over San Leandro in the North Coast Section Class 4A championship game on Saturday. The win assures De La Salle of its ninth consecutive undefeated season. The Spartans went wire to wire as the No. 1 team and have now won 113 straight games. In the victory over San Leandro, De La Salle led 42-0 at the half and pulled its starters midway through the third quarter. Running back Kevin Simon led the way with 144 yards rushing, including an 83-yard TD run on the Spartans? first offensive play.

2. Cathedral Prep (Erie, Pa.) -- (13-0) *2 Last week: Beat Mount Lebanon High, 39-14. Next game: Dec. 9 vs. No. 7 Central Bucks West High (Class AAAA state finals) Outlook: After surviving a double-overtime scare the week before, Cathedral Prep got back on track by pounding Mount Lebanon, 39-14, in the AAAA western finals on Saturday. Combine that with a win by No. 7 Central Bucks West in the eastern finals, and the stage is set for an epic showdown in the Class AAAA state championship game this Saturday at HersheyPark Stadium. C.B. West has won the last three state titles and beat Cathedral Prep, 14-13, in last year?s championship tilt. This is the game football fans in Pennsylvania have been waiting for since last December.

3. Jenks HS (Jenks, Okla.) -- (14-0) *3 Last week: Beat Tulsa Union High, 31-12, in Class 6A state finals. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: There is simply no question which is the best football team in Oklahoma. Jenks? impressive 31-12 win over former No. 16 Tulsa Union on Friday in the Class 6A state title game helped answer that question loud and clear. The Trojans have now won five straight state titles, the second-longest streak in Oklahoma history. Jenks beat Union twice this season and has defeated Union in each of the past three state finals.

4. Poly HS (Long Beach, Calif.) -- (13-0) *4 Last week: Beat Esperanza High, 49-28. Next game: Dec. 9 vs. Loyola High (Southern Section Division I finals) Outlook: Long Beach Poly appears to be getting better as the playoffs roll along. The Jackrabbits crushed Esperanza, 49-28, on Saturday in the Southern Section Division I semifinals behind a 240-yard, five-touchdown performance from running back Hershel Dennis. Things should get tougher this Saturday, when Poly takes on Loyola in the Division I finals. The Jackrabbits will have to find a way to shut down Loyola quarterback Matt Ware, who is one of the best passers in the nation. Expect a shootout with Dennis and Ware leading their respective teams.

5. West Monroe HS (West Monroe, La.) -- (14-0) *6 Last week: Beat St. Augustine High, 17-0. Next game: Dec. 9 vs. Shaw High (Class 5A finals) Outlook: West Monroe creeps into the top five this week thanks to a loss by former No. 5 St. Louis High (Hawaii). Of course, West Monroe?s impressive 17-0 blanking of a very good St. Augustine team on Saturday in the Class 5A state semifinals had a little something to do with the team?s rise in the rankings. In four postseason games, West Monroe has outscored its opponents 152-7. There?s no reason to think that trend won?t continue this weekend in the state finals against Shaw.

6. Westlake HS (Austin, Texas) -- (13-0) *7 Last week: Beat Corpus Christi Carroll High, 42-0. Next game: Dec. 9 vs. No. 14 Eisenhower High (Class 5A, Division I state semifinals) Outlook: So far this season, Westlake has pretty much cruised, with the latest rout coming in the form of a 42-0 victory over Carroll in the regional finals on Friday night. Quarterback Duke Hasson threw for 267 yards and running back Scott Ballew rushed for 111 yards and four TDs. But now comes the tricky part for Westlake. The Chaparrals will take on No. 14 Eisenhower this Saturday at the Astrodome in the Class 5A, Division I state semifinals. If Westlake can get past its toughest opponent of the year, things won?t get any easier in the state finals, as a possible showdown with former nationally ranked Midland Lee High looms.

7. Central Bucks West HS (Doylestown, Pa.) -- (14-0) *8 Last week: Beat Bethlehem Catholic High, 27-12. Next game: Dec. 9 vs. No. 2 Cathedral Prep (Class AAAA state finals) Outlook:OK, so C.B. West beat Bethlehem Catholic, 27-12, on Saturday in the Class AAAA eastern finals. But by now, that?s old news. It?s time to look forward. With No. 2 Cathedral Prep?s win in the western finals, the stage is set for an epic showdown in the Class AAAA state championship game this Saturday at HersheyPark Stadium. C.B. West has won the last three state titles and beat Cathedral Prep, 14-13, in last year?s championship contest. This is the game football fans in Pennsylvania have been waiting for since last December.

8. Katy HS (Katy, Texas) -- (13-0) *9 Last week: Beat Aldine High, 24-9. Next game: Dec. 9 vs. Alief Elsik High (Class 5A, Division II state quarterfinals) Outlook: Katy kept marching along in the Class 5A, Division II playoffs with a 24-9 win over Aldine in the regional semifinals. Running backs Jamel Branch and Jerrold Jones combined to rush for 210 yards, and quarterback Jared Kaspar threw for 118 yards. Katy, which will face Alief Elsik in the state quarterfinals this Saturday, is still three wins away from the Division II title.

9. Hackensack HS (Hackensack, N.J.) -- (12-0) *10 Last week: Beat Teaneck High, 21-12, in Group IV state finals. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Hackensack wrapped up an unbeaten season and a spot in the Top 10 with a 21-12 win over Teaneck in the Group IV state championship game on Sunday. Running back Bryan Wilson rushed for 126 yards and two scores. With several higher-ranked teams still facing tough competition over the next two weeks, Hackensack stands a good chance of moving up another spot or two before the final rankings are released.

10. Lincoln HS (Tallahassee, Fla.) -- (13-0) *11 Last week: Beat Evans High, 24-7. Next game: Dec. 8 vs. Palm Bay High (Class 6A state semifinals) Outlook: Lincoln moves into the Top 10 for the first time this season following a 24-7 victory over Evans in the regional finals on Friday. More importantly, Lincoln moves into the Class 6A state semifinals against Palm Bay (10-2) this Friday. Running back Mike Gilliam, as usual, led the way with 290 yards rushing and two TDs in the win over Evans.

11. Joliet Catholic Academy (Joliet, Ill.) -- (14-0) *12 Last week: Beat Metamora High, 27-14, in Class 4A state finals on Nov. 25. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Joliet Catholic won its second consecutive and ninth overall Class 4A state title with a 27-14 victory over previously undefeated Metamora on Nov. 25. Running back J.R. Zwierzynski led the way with 172 yards rushing and two TDs. With its season complete, Joliet Catholic will now sit back and see if it can break into the Top 10 as the rest of the nation fights it out in the playoffs.

12. St. Thomas Aquinas HS (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) -- (13-0) *13 Last week: Beat Fort Myers High, 41-6. Next game: Dec. 8 vs. Southeast High (Class 4A state semifinals) Outlook: St. Thomas Aquinas crushed Fort Myers, 41-6, on Friday in the Class 4A regional finals. Aquinas has had little trouble with its three playoff opponents thus far, but that should change this Friday against former nationally ranked Southeast (10-3). St. Thomas Aquinas will need to contain playmaking quarterback Adrian McPherson if the team hopes to advance to next week?s state title game.

13. Upper Arlington HS (Columbus, Ohio) -- (15-0) *14 Last week: Beat Solon High, 15-9, in Division I state finals. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Upper Arlington won the Division I state championship on Saturday with a grind-it-out 15-9 victory over then-No. 18 Solon. Running back Jeff Backes was the clear MVP of the game, rushing for 183 yards and two touchdowns and intercepting a pass at his own goal line with 46 seconds remaining to secure the win. Upper Arlington may have had the toughest road of anyone in the nation to its state title. The Golden Bears defeated a pair of nationally ranked teams ? Colerain High in the semifinals and Solon in the finals ? to win the championship.

14. Eisenhower HS (Aldine, Texas) -- (13-0) *15 Last week: Beat Hastings High, 29-21. Next game: Dec. 9 vs. No. 6 Westlake High (Class 5A, Division I state semifinals) Outlook: Eisenhower set the stage for another Top 25 showdown with a 29-21 win over Hastings in the Class 5A, Division I regional finals this past weekend. And if Eisenhower thought it had a tough time with Hastings, wait till the team gets a look at No. 6 Westlake this Saturday in the state semifinals. A win would put Eisenhower in the state title game for the second year in a row. But that?ll be easier said than done against Westlake.

15. Harrison HS (Farmington Hills, Mich.) -- (14-0) *17 Last week: Beat East Lansing High, 42-0, in Division III state finals on Nov. 25. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Harrison won its second straight state title and 11th overall with a 42-0 rout of East Lansing in the Division III finals on Nov. 25. Harrison did all of its damage in the first half, invoking the mercy rule for only the second time in state finals history and setting a state record with 42 first-half points. Of course, that shouldn?t come as a surprise since Harrison mercied 11 of the 14 teams it played this season. Even more impressive is that 12 of Harrison?s opponents made the postseason.

16. Red Bank HS (Chattanooga, Tenn.) -- (15-0) *19 Last week: Beat Riverdale High, 27-7, in Class 5A state finals. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: One week after playing in a downpour in the state semifinals, Red Bank won the Class 5A state title by beating Riverdale, 27-7, on Saturday in blizzard-like conditions. The snow didn?t bother junior running back Gerald Riggs, who rushed for 209 yards and three touchdowns in the win. In the past two weeks, Red Bank has jumped all the way from No. 24 to No. 16.

17. Eden Prairie HS (Eden Prairie, Minn.) -- (13-0) *20 Last week: Beat Cretin-Derham Hall, 24-14, in Class 5A state finals on Nov. 24. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Eden Prairie capped an undefeated season with an impressive 24-14 win over former nationally ranked Cretin-Derham Hall in the Class 5A state title game on Nov. 24. Eden Prairie fell behind, 14-0, but rallied behind quarterback Mike Erickson, who finished with 247 passing yards and two touchdowns.

18. Southeast HS (Lincoln, Neb.) -- (13-0) *21 Last week: Beat Omaha Creighton Prep, 14-7 (2OT), in Class A state finals on Nov. 17. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Southeast finished its season more than two weeks ago, but the team climbed another three spots this week. A 14-7 double overtime win over Omaha Creighton Prep on Nov. 17 gave Southeast an undefeated season and the Class A state title.

19. Venice HS (Venice, Fla.) -- (13-0) *22 Last week: Beat Manatee High, 24-21. Next game: Dec. 8 vs. Ely High (Class 5A state semifinals) Outlook: A week after knocking off the nation?s No. 2 team, Venice avoided a letdown with a 24-21 victory over Manatee in the Class 5A regional finals on Friday. Venice has shown a knack for winning the close ones, beating Lakeland High, 34-30, and then squeaking past Manatee by three. Venice will take on Ely (12-1) in the state semifinals this Friday.

20. Rockhurst HS (Kansas City, Mo.) -- (14-0) *23 Last week: Beat Pattonville High, 23-7, in Class 5A state finals on Nov. 24. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Rockhurst handled Pattonville, 23-7, on Nov. 24 to win the Class 5A state championship, its first since 1987. Geoff Brown racked up 115 yards and two TDs on the ground, while Noah Strozier returned an interception 43 yards for a score.

21. Mt. Carmel HS (Chicago, Ill.) -- (13-1) *24 Last week: Beat Providence Catholic High, 38-12, in Class 5A state finals on Nov. 25. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: One loss on its record doesn?t overshadow the kind of dominating season Mt. Carmel put together this year in winning its third consecutive Class 5A state title. Mt. Carmel capped a 13-1 season by routing Providence Catholic, 38-12, on Nov. 25 in the Class 5A finals. Don Dorham rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

22. Independence HS (Charlotte, N.C.) -- (14-1) *25 Last week: Beat Anson High, 30-28. Next game: Dec. 9 vs. South View High (Class 4-A state finals) Outlook: Chris Leak connected with Bradley Hinton for a 61-yard touchdown reception just 12 seconds into the game, and Independence held on for a 30-28 win over Anson in the Class 4-A state semifinals on Friday night. Hinton caught nine balls for 178 yards and two scores. Mario Crowe added two touchdowns on the ground. Independence will actually enter this Saturday?s state title game against unbeaten South View (14-0) as the underdog. But as its 36-10 win over then-No. 9 Richmond County on Nov. 24 suggests, don?t count Independence out. On the flip side, a win by South View in the championship contest could vault that team into the Top 25.

23. Glades Central HS (Belle Glade, Fla.) -- (13-0) *NR Last week: Beat Rockledge High, 20-17. Next game: Dec. 8 vs. Armwood High (Class 3A state semifinals) Outlook: Glades Central debuts in the Top 25 this week after holding on for a thrilling 20-17 victory over Rockledge in the regional finals on Friday night in a matchup of Florida?s top two Class 3A teams. Rockledge missed a 25-yard field-goal attempt that would have tied the game with less than 10 seconds left. The win puts Glades Central in the state semifinals for the fourth straight season. Armwood (11-2) will be the opponent this Friday.

24. Moss Point HS (Moss Point, Miss.) -- (13-1) *NR Last week: Beat Clinton High, 45-14, in Class 5A state finals. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: Much like No. 21 Mt. Carmel, Moss Point bounced back from an early-season loss to win a state title and earn a spot in our Top 25. Moss Point won its championship in dominating fashion on Friday, routing highly touted Clinton, 45-14, in the Class 5A state finals.

25. Solon HS (Solon, Ohio) -- (14-1) *18 Last week: Lost to Upper Arlington High, 15-9, in Division I state finals. Next game: Season complete. Outlook: No. 25 is always the toughest spot to pick, and this week was no exception. Despite its 15-9 loss to No. 13 Upper Arlington in the Division I state title game, Solon wins out over a slew of newcomers and another formerly ranked team that lost in the state finals over the weekend. In the end, it came down to Solon and Tulsa Union High, which was ranked No. 16 last week and lost to No. 3 Jenks High, 31-12, on Friday. Solon gets the nod for two reasons: 1) Its margin of defeat was much smaller, as Solon even had a chance to win the game in the final minute before an interception at the goal line; and 2) Solon?s loss was its first of the year, while Union now has two losses on its record. Add in the fact that Solon beat St. Ignatius High and Massillon Perry High on its way to the state finals, and this team deserves a spot in the Top 25.

Dropped out: No. 5 St. Louis High (Hawaii) ? lost to Kahuku High, 26-20, in state finals. No. 16 Tulsa Union High (Okla.) ? lost to Jenks High, 31-12, in state finals.
