Final National Girls' Soccer Top 10 SchoolSports.com | |||
1. Walsh Jesuit HS (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) -- (21-0-1) *2 2. River Hill HS (Clarksville, Md.) -- (18-0-0) *5 Jamie Goertler scored her only goal of the season with a little more than two minutes remaining in the Maryland Class 3A state championship game. It was enough to vault River Hill over Bel Air High, 1-0, for the state title and a No. 2 ranking. River Hill has won 26 straight games and outscored opponents 57-5 this season. 3. Southside HS (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) -- (20-0-0) *6 Kaitlyn Dowling, Christine Abrahams and Liz Roberti all scored as Southside won its first state title since 1987 with a 4-1 thumping of Monroe Woodbury High. In the semifinals, it was Katherine Stritzl's goal with less than 10 minutes remaining that gave Southside a 1-0 triumph against Webster High. 4. Ludlow HS (Ludlow, Mass.) -- (21-0-0) *8 The Ludlow girls, just like the boys, defeated Marshfield High, 2-0, in the Massachusetts state finals. Stephanie Santos scored both goals, with Liz Dyjak assisting both times. The victory avenged last season's disappointing 2-1 loss to Newton North High in the title game. 5. Cranford HS (Cranford, N.J.) -- (21-0-1) *3 Cranford lost out on an opportunity to win the state title outright and finish the season with a No. 2 national ranking by playing a 0-0 tie with Middletown South High in the New Jersey Group 3 championship game. But the girls from Cranford obviously have nothing to be upset about. After three successful seasons that saw the team take one step closer to a title, Cranford achieved the goal of state champion this year -- even if the team does have to share the honor. 6. Carmel HS (Carmel, Ind.) -- (22-1-1) *7 Carmel was the first team in the Top 10 to win a state title a few weeks back and will now finish the season as the sixth-best team in the country. 7. Wayzata HS (Wayzata, Minn.) -- (20-1-0) *9 Also finishing play several weeks ago, Wayzata won a state championship in Minnesota and watched many Top 10 teams drop out. All of that turned into a No. 7 ranking for Wayzata at the end of the season. 8. Sandia HS (Albuquerque, N.M) -- (21-2-0) *10 Sandia cracked the Top 10 last week and will finish the season in the eighth spot. The girls from Sandia beat La Cueva High, 3-1, in the state finals on Nov. 4. 9. St. John Vianney HS (Holmdel, N.J.) -- (21-1-0) *NR St. John ended Immaculate Heart Academy's 56-game winning streak on a goal by Deana Contri for a 1-0 victory in the Parochial A title game. The win left IHA out of the Top 10 and St. John in with the season now complete. 10. Jesuit HS (Portland, Ore.) -- (18-1-0) *4 Another team that lost in the state finals but deserves recognition for all of its accomplishments is Jesuit. A 1-0 loss to Centennial High last Saturday in the state title game ended Jesuit's incredible 128-game winning streak against Oregon opponents, which dated back seven years. Jesuit also saw its overall 108-game winning streak come to an end. Dropped Out: No. 1 Immaculate Heart Academy (Washington Township, N.J.) (23-1-0) -- lost to St. John Vianney High, 1-0, in the state finals.
*: last week's ranking
Editor's Note: These rankings reflect only teams that play in the fall and are currently in season. SchoolSports is aware that other areas of the country play soccer in the winter and spring, but those teams are not eligible for the fall Top 10.
