Player Diary: Charles Rush

On Nov. 9, we had our first playoff game against Erie McDowell High for our district championship. We played them on Oct. 21 and won convincingly, 54-6. This game would be different, however, because in the previous game they were missing six starters, and five of the six starters would return for the playoff game.

We got out to an early lead by scoring touchdowns on our first two possessions and another touchdown off an interception return. We continued to score throughout the night, and the final score turned out to be 62-21 in our favor.

Cathedral Prep (Pa.) defensive terror Charles Rush still has a long list of college choices.

Two days after the game, I attended the Michigan-Penn State game at Michigan. The game was played hard by both teams and went back and forth until the fourth quarter. Michigan pulled away from Penn State partly because Penn State capitalized on only two of its five field-goal attempts. The final score of the game was 33-11.

While at the game, I had a chance to spend some time with other players being recruited by Michigan. Some of those players were Marlin Jackson from Sharon, Pa., Dan Simelis and Tyler Palko from Pittsburgh and Ernest Shazor from Detroit.

A couple of days ago (Nov. 18), we continued the process of trying to get to the state championship game by playing Allderdice High. Allderdice is a school out of Pittsburgh that lost its previous game to Perry High for the Pittsburgh City League championship. Allderdice came into the game without three of its best players due to injury.

On their first possession of the game, the Dragons drove the ball to our 15-yard line and then fumbled. We used this opportunity to score the first touchdown of the game. But after this touchdown, our offense started to sputter and didn't get on track until the second quarter. The score at halftime was 42-0. In the second half, our starters only came back on the field for a punt and an extra-point attempt. The final score of the game was 49-0.

This win moved us into the AAAA western semifinals and puts us against Altoona High again. In the first meeting this year (Oct. 6), we beat them 46-10. As they say, beating a team twice in a year is hard to do, and I know this will be a tough game for us.

After the past year of receiving mail from various colleges, I have finally narrowed down my lists of schools and decided where I am going to take my official visits. I am going to take official visits to UCLA, Michigan, Miami, Penn State and Notre Dame. I am also going to take an unofficial trip to Pitt. The reason why I'm not taking an official to Pitt is because it is only a two-hour drive from Erie and I've been there numerous times.
