Mary Descenza -- Rosary High (Ill.) Girls' Swimming
Descenza recorded the fastest 100-yard butterfly time in Illinois state history at the Neuqua Valley (Naperville) Sectional swim meet last week. The junior finished with a time of 54.91 seconds, breaking the record of 54.99 set in 1992 by Rockford Guilford High's Lisa Coole. The record time, however, remains unofficial because the Illinois High School Association only recognizes times set in state meet competition. Descenza also won the 200-yard freestyle and was part of two sectional champion relay teams as Rosary won the sectional title with 255 points.

Stephen Grillo -- Savio Prep (Mass.) Football
Grillo, a junior tailback, scored 38 points (five touchdowns and four two-point conversions) on Nov. 13 to break the Massachusetts single-season scoring record. Grillo brought his season total to 270 points -- one more than Norwell High's Brian Fabrizio scored in 1998. The 5-foot-6, 155-pound Grillo also set the state record with 40 touchdowns this season. Savio still has one game left on its schedule, a Thanksgiving Day showdown with Austin Prep.

Alan Webb -- South Lakes High (Va.) Boys' Cross County
In what has become an annual fall event, Webb won his third straight AAA state cross country meet on Nov. 11 in Great Meadow, Va., in dominating fashion. The South Lakes senior finished with a three-mile time of 15:03.3, breaking the course record of 15:08.7 he set last year. Webb crossed the finish line a whopping 29 seconds ahead of Oakton High's Matt Maline, who came in second.

Michelle Piantadosi -- Olympic Heights High (Fla.) Girls' Volleyball
Piantadosi led Olympic Heights to its fifth straight Class 6A state volleyball title on Nov. 11. The 6-foot-3 senior middle blocker earned tournament MVP honors after recording seven kills, four blocks, four digs and three service points in the Lions' championship match win over Miami Sunset High, 15-9, 15-6. Piantadosi will head to the University of Tennessee next year.

Jessa Vacek -- Southlake Carroll High (Texas) Girls' Cross County
After coming up just short the past three years, Vacek finally won the Class 4A state cross country meet on Nov. 11 in Round Rock, Texas, with a two-mile time of 11:10. Vacek, a senior, finished second at the state meet as a freshman and junior and came in fourth as a sophomore. Vacek, who was the state champion in the 1,600 meters last spring in track, led Southlake Carroll to the Class 4A cross country team title as well.
