Elizabeth Seton High (Washington, D.C.) track coach Carlos Alexander died of a heart attack last week. The 38-year-old Alexander, who had been coaching the team for the past 12 years, guided the squad to its third consecutive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference outdoor title in May. ...

Former Western High (Md.) girls' basketball star Dana Johnson has returned as the school's head coach. Johnson, who played in college at Tennessee and then in the ABL, won Class 4A state title at Western as a player in 1994 and 1995. ...

Passaic High (N.J.) boys' basketball coach Marshall Grier, Jr., who was accused of grade tampering, had his suspension reduced from this entire season to six games. The school board made the decision after determining that Grier pressured teachers into raising the grades of then-senior star player Patrick Sylvester in order to maintain his eligibility. Grier has coached at Passaic for eight seasons.

Midwest
The Carmel High (Ind.) girls' soccer team won its fourth state crown since 1994 with a 5-0 victory over Chesterton High on Saturday. Carmel finished 22-1-1 and outscored its opponents 119-5 this season. ...

Sacred Heart Academy's (Ky.) Stephanie Tucker, one of the nation's top swimmers, has committed to Louisville. Tucker, who has won 11 state titles, picked the Cardinals over LSU, Tennessee and Auburn. ...

Marvin Neals, 58, is back in coaching. The former Soldan High (Mo.) head boys' basketball coach, who won a state title in 1981 and has a career record of 327-141, has returned to coach at Cardinal Ritter College Prep (Mo.). He resigned in 1990 to pursue school administration, and his return became official on Thursday. ...

Rockford High's (Mich.) Dathan Ritzenhein, one of the top cross country runners in the nation, has orally committed to attend the University of Colorado next season. Ritzenhein won the Foot Locker cross country national championship last year. Colorado is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation in men's cross country. ...

Three-time Kentucky state wrestling champion Marcus LeVesseur, a senior at Bloomington Kennedy High (Ind.), committed to the University of Minnesota on Tuesday. LeVesseur won the Class 3A title last year at 145 pounds and moved from Kentucky prior to this year. He opted for the Gophers over Iowa State.

Southwest
Monarch High (Colo.) running back Tyler Sparks will attend Colorado State next year, but he will be converted to a wide receiver. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Sparks has amassed 1,284 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns this season and chose CSU over Arizona State and Oregon.

Southeast
Birmingham Brother Rice (Ala.) football coach Al Fracessa earned his 300th career victory this past week. Fracessa is in his 32nd season at Brother Rice and defeated Southfield High, 35-13, on Saturday to reach the milestone. He led Brother Rice to state titles in 1977, 1980, 1983 and 1990. Fracessa also coached at Royal Oak Shrine High before moving to Rice in 1960. ...

Sophomore Chris Brady of Morrisville Green Hope High (N.C.) shot a record-tying 69 to win the N.C. High School Athletic Association boys' golf championship on Tuesday. His score matched the lowest score in event history, which dates to 1969. ...

Huntsville Lee High (Ala.) 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward Duane Erwin officially committed to Memphis Tuesday, picking John Calipari's program over the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Erwin averaged 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots per game last season.

Chamberlain High (Fla.) senior golfer Whitney Code has committed to the University of Florida. The 18-year-old won the state championship as a sophomore and was runner-up her freshman and junior seasons.

West
Aliso Niguel High's (Calif.) Leisl Hasbrouck shot a two-over-par 74 Tuesday to win the Sea View League individual girls' golf championship by seven strokes over defending champion Stella Lee of Irvine High. Hasbrouck, a freshman, trailed Lee by a shot after shooting an 83 on Monday, but finished with a two-round total of 157 to claim the title.

Troy High (Calif.) guard Veronica Johns-Richardson orally committed to Colorado. She averaged 18 points, seven rebounds and 5.5 assists per game last season. Also, Kristen Mann of Foothill High (Calif.) has given a verbal commitment to UC-Santa Barbara. The 6-foot-1 forward chose UCSB over Stanford, UCLA and Pepperdine.
