Anita Siraki -- Hoover High (Calif.)
Smith, a sophomore, won the Akron Goodyear Park cross country race last weekend in a time of 16:02 and led his team to the title. Smith picked up the pace for the squad, which was without one of its top runners in Matt Kassouf (stress fracture). Laura Kennedy -- Lafayette High (Mo.) The senior easily won her second straight Class 4A district cross country title on Oct. 21 and also helped Lafayette win the team crown. Kennedy finished the 3.1-mile course in a time of 19:43, 17 seconds ahead of the next runner, and qualified for this Saturday's sectional meet, which is also at Jefferson Barracks. Joe Thorne -- Lakeside High (Ga.) Thorne won his second consecutive 5K race in a course-record 15:50 and continued his perfect record this season. Thorne, who was the state runner-up last year in Class 4A, helped lead his team to a sweep at the DeKalb County Cross Country Championships. Anne Shadle -- South Sioux City High (Neb.) Shadle, Nebraska's Class B girls' cross country champion, beat Class A champ Laura Spanheimer for the all-class gold at the 21st girls' state meet at Kearney Country Club. Shadle finished with a time of 15:08.6 over the 4,000-meter course, while Spanheimer crossed the line in 15:19.9. Ben Stern -- Georgetown Day High (Washington, D.C.) Stern, who made a wrong turn two years ago on the very same course, easily outdistanced the field to win the Georgetown Prep Cross-Country Classic in Rockville, Md., in a course-record time of 15:43.21. The junior broke away at the two-mile mark and cruised in the 3.1-mile race. Michelle Sikes -- Lakewood High (Ohio) The sophomore ran a blistering three-mile time of 18:40 to win the girls' Division I district title at Edgewater State Park last weekend. It was Sikes' second straight victory in the event. Suzanne Griffing -- St. Francis Prep (N.Y.) Griffing, a sophomore, won the Girls' A race at the Eastern States Cross Country Championship at Van Cortland Park in New York on Oct. 21 with a 2.5-mile time of 15:40. Griffing finished seven seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Mark Tower -- Arvada West High (Colo.) Tower, whose only loss this season came against a two-state state champ from South Dakota, won the Metro-North cross country regional at Viele Lake in Colorado on Oct. 20. Tower finished with a time of 16:25, which was 12 seconds ahead of Wheat Ridge High's (Colo.) Paul Michel. Tower will be the favorite at this Saturday's state meet at Kent Denver High. Bobby Curtis -- St. Xavier High (Ky.) Curtis remained perfect this season after a victory in the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Meet of Champions at the Kentucky Horse Park. He won the Class 3A boys' 5,000-meter race in a time of 15:16.31, more than 40 seconds ahead of the closest competitor.
