| Torbert, Rickert announce; Sampson tomorrow By Jeff Goodman SchoolSports.com | |||

A pair of top high school basketball players, Kelvin Torbert and Rick Rickert, each made their college decisions this afternoon (Oct. 25) and another, 6-foot-11 Jamal Sampson, will chose St. Louis University tomorrow. As reported here last week, Rickert, a 6-foot-10, 220-pound forward from East High (Duluth, Minn.) orally committed to the Arizona Wildcats over the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Rickert averaged 29 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks per game last season while shooting 88 percent from the free-throw line. He is versatile and may be able to play any of the frontcourt positions in college. Torbert, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound shooting guard from Northwestern High (Flint, Mich.), will attend Michigan State next season. He is considered one of the top five players in the country and chose the Spartans after considering Cincinnati, Connecticut and Michigan. Torbert averaged 25 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks per game last season as a junior at Northwestern. The 250-pound Sampson was slated to make his decision today, but he postponed the announcement until tomorrow. However, the star Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) player says he is almost certainly headed to St. Louis. "I'm pretty much there, and it looks like St. Louis," Sampson told SchoolSports.com today. "But it's still a slight possibility that it could be Cal." "The two main reasons are playing time and coaching," adds Sampson. "I'll probably just make the decision at school tomorrow and tell coach and then call the schools. It will be hard to call the school I don't choose and tell them no."
