Kyle's Cannon By Jeff Goodman SchoolSports.com | ||||||
There was no trash talking coming from the mouth of Kyle York in the week leading up to the big matchup against his former high school, Conroe High (Conroe, Texas), last Friday. The senior with the rifle arm didn't understand what all the fuss was about because he holds no ill feelings toward his old coach and teammates. York didn't flinch at handing the ball off to running backs the majority of the time during his two-year
"It was never a situation where I wasn't happy at Conroe, but I'm very fortunate to be in my current situation," says York. "It's opened a lot of doors for me personally." There were plenty of openings for York and his teammates Friday night, when York took it to his former team in a 35-3 rout. He was 22 of 34 for 230 yards and three touchdown passes and also ran for another score. But the success didn't come as a surprise to those following York's accomplishments this year. It's been a season of big numbers and huge victories for Spring, a team that wasn't expected to make much noise in the state football ranks. But the Lions are off to a 6-0 start and have established themselves as a top-tier team in the state. "He has pretty good speed and is actually still learning the offense," says Karas of York, who has a 3.85 GPA and scored an 1160 on his SAT. "He's a very intelligent kid, and he'll be a Division I player for certain." York, 18, made the 20-minute move from Conroe to Spring at the beginning of February when his father, a former high school football coach at Conroe, switched jobs. York averaged less than 100 yards per contest through the air in his career at Conroe and has more than doubled that output in his first six games at Spring. "It's been a lot of fun, but it's also a complicated system and a challenge for me," says York. "The quarterback is responsible for knowing where everyone is and where everyone is supposed to be. But it's made it easier that we have a big, strong offensive line and talented receivers that make me look good when I'm not playing well." Because he has so much to learn and just one year to pick it up, York won't be making any announcement on his future plans until after the season. His list includes Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU and SMU. "It's so much more important to focus on going 10-0 and being the best leader that I can be," says York, who tossed 12 touchdown passes and threw for 945 yards in his first three games this season. "If I allow myself to be absorbed more on my college decision than on my next opponent, that's going to really cripple the team. "I won't consider anything until December."
