Player Diary: Sara Randolph

Sept. 23: I am off to Charlottesville and my official visit to the University of Virginia. It should be fun to meet the team and be there with Mary McDowell, Jessica Ballweg and Nicole Bregger. I am looking forward to seeing them and watching Virginia play again.

Sept. 24: It was a great visit and I enjoyed meeting the team and seeing them in action against Florida. I really like their style of play, and they showed they can play with anyone in the second half.

On Saturday, we watched Virginia play Clemson in football. It was fun and interesting. They have a neat tradition; the students dress up to go to the game. The guys wear ties and the girls wear dresses. Interesting.

I get home tonight at 11:45 p.m., if I am lucky. U.S. Air hasn't been too good for me the last few trips with them.

Sept. 25: I made it home last night on time. My dad and I stayed at the airport until 12:45 a.m. to pick up my mom, who was returning from Austin, Texas. She has been with her mother, who is very ill. We got home about 1:30 and to sleep by 2. A short night.

Sara Randolph hopes to rehab in time to play in her state high school playoffs.

Sept. 26: I have let Anson (Dorrance, women's soccer coach at North Carolina), Chris (Petrucelli, women's soccer coach at University of Texas) and Steve (Swanson, women's soccer coach at Virginia) know that I will make a decision on college by the end of the week. I haven't been able to get with Jillian (Ellis, women's soccer coach at UCLA) because she is in Australia with the women's national team. I hope I can get in touch with her.

I also get my cast off on Friday. I can't wait.

Sept. 27: I've had telephone conversations with Anson, Chris and Steve this week. I wish I could also visit with Jillian. This is the most difficult decision I have ever made in my life. All four schools are great schools with great coaches and traditions. They are also very different in many ways.

I have been so lucky to meet such outstanding people in this process.

Sept. 28: What a bummer - the Women's National Team overtime loss to Norway was too bad! I really hate it for the U.S. team and especially April (Heinrichs, the squad's head coach). She has done such a great job in a tough situation.

My high school team lost tonight, too. We were tied with 18 seconds left and gave up a goal. Unfortunately, it was to one of three remaining undefeated teams in our conference, which probably puts us out of contention.

Sept. 29: I was down to two choices last night and have a decision, but I am going to work through it all day and call this evening.

I am excited to get my cast off. It came off without a problem, but my calf has lost some tone and my ankle is still a little swollen and stiff.

Lisa, my doctor, gave me a series of exercises and recommended that I work through a week-long therapy program before I do any serious running. I am going to a foot and ankle specialist on Monday.

I completed a good workout after school today. When I got home, I decided to give Anson a call and let him know that I am coming to UNC.

I called him on his cell phone, and it was 15 minutes before pre-game. UNC and Duke were playing at Fetzer Field. He seemed excited and let the team know that I was, "Going to be a Tar Heel."

Chris Ducar (UNC goalkeeper coach) was in the background talking about how great the '01 recruiting class should be next year.

Randolph chose UNC over Virginia, Texas and UCLA.
Now for the hard calls. I called Chris, Steve and Jillian, but didn't get anyone. I left messages for each of them. I hate having to tell them, because they have all been so good to me and are great people and coaches.

Sept. 30: I got a good workout in this afternoon in the pool. When I got back, Chris had called. I returned the call, and he was most gracious and congratulated me on my decision. Texas will be in contention next year with the players they have in this recruiting class and their freshman class.

Steve called and I had a good conversation with him. He also congratulated me and provided me with words of encouragement. He is such a nice and caring person. I haven't been able to get in touch with Jillian.

Oct. 1: My mom left early this morning for Austin to be with her mother. After church, I got a call from Jillian. She was great and congratulated me on my decision. I wanted to hear a little about the trip to Australia, but she was off to get ready for a game. I hope to have the opportunity to play for her again, with the U-21's, and for Steve with the U-18's.

We got our draw for the state high school soccer tournament and I might be able to play if my rehab works out.

Well, I am going to close for now. I will write more about my rehab and how my team is doing.
