West Breaking the school rushing record he set just two weeks ago, Tyler Ebell of Ventura High (Calif.) ran 44 times Friday for 400 yards and six scores. Ventura dropped Arroyo Grande High, 41-28. Ebell ran for 375 yards two weeks ago... Due to a safety concern, Granite Hills High (Calif.) will not continue playing varsity football this season. Only 25 players had come out for the team and, after two losses, 19 players remained. There are no seniors and only four juniors. School officials determined that putting a group of mostly sophomores against teams that feature mostly seniors could be a health hazard. Granite Hills lost its opener to Liberty High, 37-0, which is a first-year team without any seniors, and also lost to Lindsay High, 32-0.
Southwest
Midwest With a 28-0 blasting of Monticello High (Minn.) Friday, George Larson, head football coach at Cambridge-Isanti High, won his 300th game. His career record now stands at 300-64-6, and he is the first high school football coach from Minnesota to reach the 300-win plateau... Plainfield High (Ind.) got a special night from its special teams, as it wrapped up the Mid-State Conference title Friday night. Two blocked kicks that were returned for touchdowns helped Plainfield beat Whiteland High, 41-21. Jason Pociask blocked a field goal and brought it back 70 yards for a score. Later in the first half, Wayne Weaver blocked a punt and Tyler Carmichael picked it up for 10-yard touchdown return.
Northwest Two Oregon football winning streaks were snapped Friday. Sisters High, winner of 29 consecutive games, lost to Sweet Home High, 33-23. Madras High, which had won 17 straight contests, fell to Banks High, 28-21.
MidAtlantic Archbishop Carroll High (Pa.) posted its fourth straight shutout in style Saturday. Carroll mauled Archbishop Wood High, 77-0, to move its record to 5-0. While it looks as if Carroll ran up the score, the team pulled its starters after the first half with a 56-0 advantage.
Southeast Curfews at both Leroy High (Ala.) and McKenzie High probably were broken Friday night. The football game?s officials arrived at the field two hours late, which caused kickoff to be pushed back to 9:45 p.m. However, it didn?t affect Leroy, as the team ripped McKenzie, 42-6.
