1. Leesville Road HS (Raleigh, N.C.) - (4-0-0) *1
Leesville made sure no one would take its top spot by taking apart Jordan High (3-0), Cary High (4-2), Chapel Hill High (2-0) and Southeast Raleigh High (6-0) to start of the season. The major test may come later this week, when the Pride travels to Broughton, N.C., for the fourth annual Eurosport Fall Soccer Showcase. Leesville will play Kearney High (N.J.) Friday and Swansboro High (N.C.) Saturday.
2. St. Benedicts Prep (Newark, N.J.) - (0-0-0) *3
St. Benedicts benefited from Lincoln-Way's tie to start the season. It will open its season on Sept. 10 against the Hotchkiss School (Conn.).
3. St. Marks HS (Wilmington, Del.) - (0-0-0) *4
Another team that moved up by not playing, St. Marks' season begins at Caesar Rodney High Saturday (Sept. 9).
4. Lincoln-Way HS (New Lenox, Ill.) - (3-0-1) *2
After a season-opening tie with Benet High Aug. 29, Lincoln-Way has been a force. L-W got back on track by getting coach Brian Papa his 300th victory Aug. 31 (6-3 vs. Naperville North High) and winning the Best of the West Tournament. Lincoln-Way dropped Sandburg High, 4-2, Saturday for the title.
5. St. Thomas Aquinas HS (Overland Park, Kan.) - (2-0-0) *5
Chris Lee started his senior season with a two-goal, one-assist performance against Shawnee Mission East High Aug. 25. Aquinas won that game, 3-1, and took care of Blue Valley Northwest High Aug. 29, 3-0. After a game against Topeka High this week, the Saints face Blue Springs High Monday.
6. Ballard HS (Louisville, Ky.) - (4-0-0) *6
Ballard survived the competition at the Lexington Catholic Cup to start the season, but it wasn't easy. Underdog Woodford High forced Ballard to a shootout in the opening round. However, Ballard goalie Tyler Wilcox came up huge by saving three out of the four shots he faced to out-duel Woodford goalie Nathan Noble. After a 1-0 win against Franklin County High, Ballard is now riding a 31-game winning streak.
7. Sandia HS (Albuquerque, N.M.) - (3-0-0) *8
Courtesy of Rockhurst High's (Mo.) loss and some outstanding play on its own part, Sandia jumps up a notch this week. The Matadors ripped West Mesa High (10-0), St. Albans High (4-0) and Mayfield High (4-2). After a game with Manzano High this afternoon (Sept. 7), Sandia will go to the St. Pius Tournament this weekend.
8. Montgomery High (Santa Rosa, Calif.) - (2-0-0) *NR
Montgomery jumps into the Top 10 by beating Davis High, a team that hasn't lost in the regular season since 1996. Matt Bly did all the damage with a hat trick in the 3-2 win.
9. Milwaukee Marquette University HS (Milwaukee, Wis.) - (5-0-0) *NR
Marquette started the season by winning the Al Gusho Tournament with a shootout victory against highly regarded Brookfield East High. The Hilltoppers took care of an out-of-state opponent, Conant High (Ill.), 5-1, to improve to 5-0-0.
10. Broomfield HS (Broomfield, Colo.) - (0-0-0) *NR
Broomfield, a new addition to the Top 10, kicks off its season this week at the Horizon 5-Star Tournament. Broomfield has won 20 straight games heading into this season.
