Alabama's all-time leading high school passer will be sitting out the rest of his senior year. In Westbrook Christian High's 34-19 loss to Glencoe High Friday, Brodie Croyle tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and will need at least five months before a full recovery can be made. Croyle, who has played with Westbrook Christian since he was in the eighth grade, passed for 9,323 yards during his career.

Lakeland High (Fla.) established a new state record by winning its 47th straight contest Friday with a 33-0 blanking of Bartow High. Gavin Smart ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Lakeland's streak surpasses Lake Butler Union County High's run of 46 games from 1994-96.

Another record was established in Florida Friday. Frank Gore rushed for a Miami-Dade County (Fla.) record 377 yards, as his Coral Gables team demolished South Miami High, 48-0. He accomplished the feat on 38 carries and also added six touchdowns.

Life after Brock Berlin may be tougher than Evangel Christian High (La.) had imagined. With the former All-American quarterback now playing for the University of Florida, New Orleans Archbishop Shaw High halted Evangel's 60-game winning streak Saturday with a 22-19 victory. Shaw's Carlos Rachel, a sophomore starting in his first game at quarterback, threw for 186 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown strike to Steve Dickerson on the game's first play.

Southwest

Fumbling four times and accumulating only 21 second-half yards is not the way to continue a 23-game winning streak. Skyline High (Utah) coughed up the football four times and had nothing going on offense in the second half Friday in a 17-14 loss to Highland High. Brian James kicked what proved to be the game-winning field goal with 6:10 remaining in the contest.

Scoring three times in its first four plays from scrimmage Saturday, Stephenville High (Texas) grabbed a commanding 20-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back while dropping Texas City High, 39-33. Stephenville was led by a tremendous running effort by Chad Clay, who wove his way through the Texas City defense for 296 yards.

Midwest

In a game in which the teams combined for 102 points, it's no surprise Justin Zwick set a Washington High (Ohio) record for passing yards Friday. Zwick threw for 402 yards as Washington lit up Lima Senior High, 67-35.

Some of the top girls' volleyball teams from Illinois and Wisconsin gathered at the Conant/Fremd Early Bird Volleyball Classic Saturday. St. Francis (Ill.) took care of Pius XI (Wis.), 15-5, 15-12, in the finals for the title. Marian Weidner had 11 kills and Erin Virtue added seven points and three aces in the championship match. St. Francis improved its overall record to 6-0.

The Upstate Eight Conference (Ill.) revoked its rule about genders crossing over into other sports Wednesday, which will allow Adrianna Delhotal to play football for the freshman team at Elgin High. The athletic directors from the schools in the conference voted unanimously to get rid of the rule, which would have forced Delhotal to sit out her team's conference games this season.

MidAtlantic

It doesn't seem to matter where Central Bucks West High (Pa.) plays; the team still is going to win. West extended its winning streak to 46 games Saturday with a 34-6 win over Titusville High (Fla.) at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Bucks QB Mike Orihel threw for 154 yards.

Before Saturday, DeMatha High's (Md.) last football loss came Oct. 25, 1996. Well, almost four years and 32 games later, DeMatha fell to Gilman High (Md.), 14-0, in game that featured a combined 15 fumbles. Not only did DeMatha's streak end, but it also was the first time in 19 years as the head coach that Bill McGregor was shut out. The victory was Gilman's 21st in a row.

Northeast

Instead of worrying about throwing a perfect slant pattern or blitzing the quarterback, the Mt. Saint Michael High (N.Y.) football team must worry about how to replace a bus full of equipment. The team was traveling to its first scrimmage of the season, at Somers High, Saturday, when its bus caught on fire. All players and coaches evacuated injury-free, but the equipment was not so lucky. One of the player's parent, Carol O'Malley, is making a plea to rapper Sean "Puffy" Combs to help out the school with a financial contribution. Combs is an alumnus of Mt. Saint Michael and, according to O'Malley, visited the school last year and attended a football game. The team is scheduled to open its season on Sept. 16.
