| Mahan, Tryon swinging for titles By Jeff Lemberg SchoolSports.com | ||||||

Hunter Mahan is at it again. The Class of 2000 graduate of McKinney High (Texas) and the former No. 1-ranked junior golfer in America, has advanced to today's quarterfinals of the 100th U.S. Amateur, held at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.
The winner of Mahan's quarterfinal match will face either David Eger, 48, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., or Gary Wolstenholme, 40, of England in the semifinals. Those two will square off today at 1:30 p.m. (EST). In other golf news, representatives of Florida are leaving their mark on the PGA Junior Championship. Ty Tryon, 16, of Orlando and Naree Wongluekiet of Bradenton are leading the boys' and girls' divisions, respectively, heading into today's third round of action at the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Tryon shot a 70 yesterday to increase his lead to six strokes, with an overall score of six-under-par 138. Ryan Posey of Dallas is nipping at the teen's heals with a 144. "My game is really good right now," said Tryon. "I just came from the U.S. Amateur and I had some pretty embarrassing scores. I am recovering now." Tryon actually teamed up with Mahan - both were 1999 first team Polo Golf Junior All-Americans - for the American Junior Golf Association Justin Leonard/Deloitte and Touche Junior Team Championship in Dallas from June 5-8. They finished seventh with a 1-over-par, three-day total of 218. Wongluekiet, 14, who is the No. 2-ranked junior girls' golfer in the country by the PGA, shot a 6-under-par 66 yesterday to take a three-shot lead over Tampa's Whitney Code, yet another Floridian. Wongluekiet nailed six birdies and scored only one bogey yesterday en route to a 66, one stroke shy of the second-round 18-hole record. Tryon is entering his sophomore year at Lake Highlands Prep (Orlando, Fla.) this fall, after transferring there from Bradenton Academy in Florida, where he was a schoolmate of Wongluekiet. Tryon finished second in the 1999 Florida High School Athletic Association Class A individual championships, as Christo Greyling of Lake Highland Prep captured the state crown by nine strokes.
