Southwest Garth Jax, a former four-time Pro Bowl selection and 11-year NFL veteran, is stepping into the coaching ranks. But the former Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals linebacker will have his work cut out for him. Jax takes over at the helm of Valley Lutheran High (Ariz.), a team that finished 1-7 in its first year of existence last season. ? Tim Reynolds, the new head football coach at Noble High (Okla.), isn't wasting any time getting his team ready for the upcoming season. At 12:01 a.m. Tuesday morning, Noble High players hit the field for their first formal practice of the year. It was nothing new for Reynolds. He started the "midnight madness" tradition back in 1995 while at Chickasha High (Okla.). Getting in as much practice as possible should help Noble, which has gone 3-37 from 1996-99. Midwest Leigh Anne Hardin, a Class of 2000 graduate of Martinsville High (Ind.) who just last week won a record 18th American Junior Golf Association tournament, fell in the second round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Wednesday in Portland, Ore. Meredith Duncan, from Shreveport, La., knocked off the teenage superstar 3 and 2. ? The Minnesota State High School League decided Tuesday to split the one girls' hockey division into two parts. As of the 2001-02 season, the 115 schools offering girls' hockey will be divided into Class AA and A. Northwest Helena High (Mon.) golfers dominated the Montana Jr. Championships Monday. Seth Jamison fired a two-day score of 145 (71-74) to win the boys' 15-17 division by three strokes. As for the females, Devon Newell won the girls' 14-17 division by four strokes with a two-day score of 165. ? Zapper McGrath, who attends Sehome High (Wash.), is the only player to make the trip both times. MidAtlantic The Montgomery County (Md.) eligibility committee decided Wednesday to allow Brian Douglas of Churchill High to play football this season. Douglas, who was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder after repeating the ninth grade, will be entering his fifth year of high school. He did not participate in sports his first year, and Montgomery County allows students to compete in eight semesters of athletics upon enrolling in the ninth grade. West April Pettigrew of El Toro High (Calif.) found the back of the net in overtime to lead her Southern California Blues under-16 girls' soccer team to a U.S. Youth Soccer national title Monday. Her goal was the only one scored in the Blues' 1-0 victory against the Prince William Sparklers (Va.). Southeast Five high school athletes earn double victories at the AAU Junior Olympic track championships, which wrapped up on Saturday, in Orlando, Fla. They are:
