Joe Smoker may have only thrown the ball seven times for Pennsylvania in the Big 33 Classic football game Saturday, but it proved to be plenty against Ohio. The Manheim Central High quarterback completed 5 of 7 passes for 166 yards and three touchdowns as the graduated Pennsylvania seniors rolled to an easy 31-14 win against Ohio.

Apparently Jeremy Karam plays best at night. Karam starred on the hill and at the plate as his Bangor Comrades (Maine) defeated Trenton (Maine), 15-10, Sunday to clinch a spot in the American Legion state baseball tournament. An earlier tournament at Mansfield Stadium had to be delayed due to rain, and by the time the Comrades got around to beating Trenton ? in a game that started on Saturday , it was shortly after 1 a.m. Karam threw six innings while striking out 12 and allowing five unearned runs. He added a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored.

Offense was nonexistent until the final minutes of the 54th annual Montana Shrine Bowl Saturday. Trailing, 3-2, with a third-and-30 situation, the East squad opened up its bag of tricks. A short throw turned into a huge scoring opportunity, as Laurel High's Matt Kimmet completed a pass to Havre High's Nate Baltrusch. Baltrusch then pitched the ball back to Park City High's Chad Gluhm, who ran 71 yards for the score with a little more than four minutes remaining in the contest. The East held on for an 8-3 win.

It took eight playoff holes, but Black Hills High (Wash.) senior Shane Prante finally won the Miller Amateur Championship Sunday. Playing at the Tumwater Valley Municipal Golf Course, Prante and Field Kline each fired a 2-under par 142 over the course of two rounds to send the championship into the playoff.

The Alabama All Sports Week wrapped up with the North football All-Stars blanking the South Friday, 17-0. Pelham High's Derrion Gee caught a touchdown pass and rushed for 71 yards to lead the North. The win marked the seventh event that the North captured. Earlier in the week, the North won boys' soccer, girls' soccer, boys' basketball, girls' basketball, fast-pitch softball and slow-pitch softball. The South brought home wins in volleyball and baseball.

The West's 6-0 half-time lead quickly evaporated Saturday, as the East scored 14 points in the decisive third quarter to win the Tennessee East-West Shrine Football Classic, 14-6. Sam Pickett, of South Pittsburgh High, helped lead the attack with 100 yards rushing on 18 carries. Keeping the West close was Glencliff High's C.J. Johnson, who caught five passes for 111 yards.

West

Several East All-Star pitchers combined to shut down the West Sunday in Nevada's American Legion All-Star Game, held at Durango High. After allowing six runs in the first two innings, the East bullpen let only one more West player cross home plate in the 18-7 victory. Eldorado High's James Green, a sophomore-to-be, collected two hits (including a homer) while driving in two runs for the East.

A federal jury in Charlottesville, Va., ruled Thursday that the Virginia High School League does discriminate against female athletes due to the different scheduling of sports seasons throughout each division. In Virginia, schools in Group A and AA play girls' basketball in the fall, while Group AAA plays during the normally scheduled season of winter. If a school switches from AAA to AA status, then a female athlete will have to decide between basketball and whichever sport she typically would play in the fall. This does not occur in any male sports.

Title IX, a federal law that is part of the Educational Amendment of 1972, requires federally funded athletic programs to provide males and females equal opportunities. Thursday's decision awarded 11 girls from Suffolk County $187,000 in damages stemming from the 1997 lawsuit.

There was never a dull moment for Dunbar High (Washington, D.C.) basketball player Andrew Washington Friday. He first led Dunbar to a double-overtime, 53-51, summer league victory against Central High. Washington netted 20 points and grabbed 11 boards in the win.

Following the summer league game, in the same gymnasium (Largo High), Washington then played in the league's All-Star game. Once again, he didn't disappoint. The teen scored 14 points in his East team's 81-76 win against the West.
