Joey Guajardo - Round Rock High (Texas), Baseball

Round Rock High's Joey Guajardo continued his dominance of Texas Class 5A batters this past spring, finishing the season with an 11-2 record and an ERA below 1.00. He also added four more no-hitters to a career total that now stands at six and helped lead the No. 2 Dragons (27-5) to a berth in the state's regional quarterfinal.

Since the last time we checked in with Joey Guajardo, the weather that kept him off the mound has finally begun to cooperate. He's had little time for anything but baseball as he travels with his team, the Wing, in the Austin Select Baseball League.

"We're doing really good," says Guajardo.

This past weekend, the Wing was among 16 teams that played a virtual baseball marathon at the Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA) Tournament, held in Austin. Each team played a guaranteed four-game set before the tourney field was narrowed down through single-elimination action.

Guajardo gave another jaw-dropping performance as he went the distance in a 5-1 victory. He didn't allow an earned run and struck out 15. With the win, Guajardo and his teammates earned an invitation to the CABA World Series, to be held in Cleveland, Ohio, July 21-30.

"He's been doing well, both pitching and hitting," says his father, Joe Guajardo. "But, of course I'd say that. He's my son."

With his velocity in the low- to mid-90s, Guajardo has been busy tuning up for his senior year at Round Rock High by sharpening the location of his curve and fastball.

"I just want to keep on working my mechanics to perfect them," he says.

Guajardo's continuous stride toward perfection has college scouts scrambling for his services. Texas A&M and Baylor have both contacted the teen, but they're a little late; Guajardo already has plans.

"I just told them I was with Texas," he says.

Guajardo's jam-packed schedule doesn't relent any time soon, as he and the Wing are now in Atlanta, Ga., to play in yet another tournament.
