The Golden West Invitational track meet, held Saturday in Sacramento, Calif., brought together some of the best high school runners, throwers and jumpers in the nation.

Donald Sage of York High (Ill.) nearly stole the show as he attempted to break the four-minute mile. His quest came up just short though, winning the event with a time of 4:04.2.

In the boys' sprints, Northwestern High's (Md.) Dwight Thomas dominated the field. He rushed past competitors in the 100- (10.32) and 200-meter dash (20.5).

Eric Logsdon of Canby High (Ore.) won the 3,200-meter race. He finished five seconds faster than the rest of the competition, in 8:47.8.

For the girls, the day belonged to Sani Roseby of Monterey High (Calif.). She proved to be the fastest female at the meet, whether there were hurdles in front of her or not. Her wins came in the 100-meter hurdles (13.77), and the 100- (11.76) and 200-meter dash (23.8).

Campbell County High's (Wyo.) Alicia Craig made quick work of the mile field, winning by a full four seconds with a time of 4:50.3. The girls' shot put came down to just a quarter-inch, with Karen Freberg of San Luis Obispo High (Calif.) edging Jessica Cosby of Granada Hills High (Calif.), 48-9 1/2-48-9 1/4.

No one could come close to Warwick High's (R.I.) Kate Johnston in the hammer throw. She slung the instrument 181-5, which was almost 20 feet farther than any other competitor's throw.

Midwest

Mary Jaszczak
Joliet High (Ill.) pitcher Mary Jaszczak, right, has thrown 24 shutouts this season.
Firing her 24th shutout of the season Saturday, Mary Jaszczak helped Joliet High (Ill.) win the Class AA softball title. Joliet handled Moline, 4-0, as Jaszczak earned her 28th win in 29 decisions this year. Joliet finished the season with a 35-2 record.

She doesn't attend high school, but she has been keeping pace with the top prep sprinters in Minnesota this season. Vanessa Clarida, who goes to Olson Middle School but is talented enough to run for Bloomington Kennedy High, suffered her first loss of the season Saturday. Clarida had been perfect in every sprint she had run this year until the Class AA state meet, where she lost in the 100-meter dash to Woodbury High's Amber James. Clarida bounced back to win the 400-meter race later in the day.

Kate Martzolf of Park Tudor High (Ind.) turned in yet another perfect scholastic season. Martzolf, a junior, completed another undefeated tennis season Saturday with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ashlee Davis of Anderson Highland High. The win earned Martzolf her third straight state singles title and ran her season record to 29-0. Her career mark now stands at 76-0.

Northeast

Amesbury High (Mass.) junior softball pitcher Emily Chaput has never been considered a no-hitter type of hurler. But that has changed since the Division 3 EMass tournament started. Chaput has thrown three no-hitters in four tourney games, including Saturday's masterpiece against Greater Lowell High. Amesbury's offense gave Chaput seven runs, and she didn't give up a hit in the 7-0 victory.

The New York outdoor state track and field championships belonged to New Rochelle High sophomore Shanae Dawkins. Dawkins proved she's the best hurdler in the state when she pulled off wins in the 100-meter highs (14.22) and the 400-meter lows (60.73). She also added a first-place finish in the triple jump (39-3 3/4).

Mid-Atlantic

The Group AAA State Track and Field Championship in Virginia Saturday provided several national stories. First, Alan Webb of South Lakes High was edged out in the 800-meter race by Woodside High's Curtis Parker.

Then Rickey Harris of Centreville High turned in a meet record in the 110-meter hurdles (13.5), a national-best time this season in the 400-meter dash (46.21) and added a third first-place effort, in the 200-meter dash (21.35).

But it was Sheena Johnson who stole the show, earning four gold medals and one silver. Johnson grabbed top honors in the long jump (21-2 1/2), triple jump (40-7 1/4), 100-meter hurdles (13.82) and the 300-meter hurdles (40.94, a meet record). She placed second to Bethel High junior Ara Towns in the 100-meter dash.

Maryland's 19th Crown High School All-Star Game Sunday proved to be a matchup between coach and player. Due to an overabundance of coaches for the North team, South Carroll High coach George Richardson took to the South bench. His catcher during the regular season, Gary Harrison, stayed within his geographic region and played for the victorious North squad. Harrison was voted the game's MVP with a 3-for-3 performance including a homer, double and four RBI.

Southwest

Corpus Christi Calallen High (Texas) can finally call itself a UIL Class 4A state champion. After appearing and losing in the state finals six of the last seven years, Calallen beat Neches-Groves High, 8-6, in nine innings Saturday. Brandon Wittner broke the tie in the ninth with a single that drove in Matt Bode.

The 51st-annual Greenbelt Bowl All-Star football game was held in Childress, Texas Saturday. Game MVP Willie Thomas of host Childress High caught six passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Wheeler High quarterback Brooks Brown was the one tossing those passes. He connected nine times on 16 attempts for 218 yards and two scores. Those efforts helped the South drop the North, 29-14.
