After giving up his first run in 56 innings last week, Fabius Pompey High (N.Y.) pitcher Bryan Porter came back strong Wednesday. Pitching in a Class D playoff game against Schenevus High, Porter tossed his first career no-hitter, striking out 14 and walking only one during the 7-0 victory. To help his own cause, Porter smacked two doubles and drove in two runs.

Just when the Holy Cross High (Conn.) baseball team thought it had a trip to the CIAC championship game wrapped up Wednesday, Rockville High rallied for a victory. After allowing two runs in the top of the 10th inning, Rockville came right back with two runs of its own to tie the game. Then, a suicide squeeze bunt ended the contest. John Michaud dropped the bunt with nobody out to bring home the winning run.

Midwest
The Joliet High (Ill.) softball team finally broke Amy Krahula's scoreless innings streak Monday. The Downers Grove South High (Ill.) hurler allowed three runs in a 3-1 loss in the Class AA semifinals. They were the first earned runs Krahula has surrendered since April 15, spanning 112 1/3 innings. She finished the season with a 21-1 record and a 0.09 ERA. ...

Oak Park High (Ill.) pitcher Kerry Hayes threw her fourth no-hitter of the season Tuesday, beating New Trier High (Ill.) in the Schaumburg Sectional final, 1-0. The junior walked two and struck out nine for her 14th win of the season. Pinch runner Shanti Mitchell scored on a two-out wild pitch in the sixth inning for the game's only run.

Burnsville High (Minn.) senior Deb Means shot a 74 Wednesday to help rally her team from an eight-stroke deficit to win the team title in the final day of competition at the Minnesota Class AA golf championship. Her score played a major role in Burnsville's comeback and gave Means her first individual state title. She finished fourth last year and second as a sophomore.

Stan Nelson is finally stepping away from a school system he has known since the fourth grade. Nelson has retired from coaching cross country and track at Northwestern High (Mo.) after 35 years of service. Nelson, 57, began his Northwestern High life after being enrolled in the district in the fourth grade. His teams never won a state title, but finished second three times.

The most unlikely hitter enabled the East High (Iowa) softball team to beat Lincoln High Tuesday in a Central Iowa Metropolitan League American Conference game. Steph Cozad, who had struck out in her previous five at-bats, delivered a run-scoring infield hit in the 13th inning to help guide East to a 2-0 victory. Jackie Beemer went the distance for East, allowing just five hits and striking out 16.

Northwest
Another scoreless innings streak ended this week. Monica Hoffman, a pitcher for the Central Catholic High (Ore.) softball team, gave up her first run of the season Saturday in the Class L state title game against North Eugene High. North Eugene, which won the contest, 1-0, picked up its only run in the ninth inning to halt Hoffman's streak at 167 innings without an earned run. Last year, Hoffman and Central Catholic beat North Eugene, 1-0, in eight innings for the title.

The state of Washington has a new high school decathlon champion. Calen Powell of Lake Washington High accumulated 7,025 points at the state competition to eclipse the old mark of 6,889 points, set by Steve Erickson of Bellevue High in 1980.

Southeast
Bret Callahan of Berkeley Prep (Fla.) may have to get a bigger jacket. Callahan graduated Tuesday with 16 varsity letters to his credit. It may seem impossible, considering there are only three sports seasons and four years of high school, but Callahan ran track and cross country for the Berkeley varsity squads in both the seventh and eighth grades.

West
A couple of sophomores led the Kennedy High (Calif.) baseball team to its sixth City League title Tuesday, when it beat El Camino Real High at Dodger Stadium. Eric Moore broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out, two-run triple. Kennedy pitcher Adam Geery went the distance on the mound, striking out seven and walking one for the 4-2 win.

Santa Margarita High (Calif.) became the first team to ever score under par at the CIF-SCGA championships. The squad finished with a 3-under 357 Tuesday to win the team title. Senior Steve Conway paced the attack with a 7-under 65 to break the 18-hole meet record and take home the individual title.
