Everybody swings, everybody misses. That was the story Friday when Victor High's (N.Y.) Nate Kucha struck out all 22 batters he faced in a sectional playoff game against Eastridge High. Eastridge did get a runner on, but it came when a Kucha strikeout got away from Dan Coval became the first Pennsylvania male athlete since 1966 to win the same state track title four years in a row.

Victor's catcher, allowing the batter to take first base and set up a four-strikeout inning. Victor won the game, 10-0.

The much publicized Reading High (Mass.) boys' track team won the state Class B title Saturday. In addition to its 261 consecutive dual-meet wins, Reading added another state championship with three individual first-place finishers and five second places. Gloucester High took second. The Reading girls also won the team state title. ...

Dan Coval, a senior at Council Rock High (Pa.), became the first male athlete to win four consecutive Pennsylvania titles in the same event since Ron Smith of Columbia High did it in the 120-yard high hurdles from 1963-66. Coval braved cold, rainy conditions Saturday to yet again take home the top prize in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 9:13.07.

West

No San Diego area female sprinter, in any event, is faster than Morse High's (Calif.) Monique Henderson. Henderson proved that by winning the 400- (51.31 seconds), 200- (23.7) and 100-meter dash (11.88) Saturday at the CIF San Diego section track meet. Even more impressive was that her time in the 400 set a new national record, which had just been set one week ago by Cerritos High's (Calif.) Angel Perkins (52.28).

The winningest baseball coach in San Diego County is stepping away from the game. Dick Serrano of University of San Diego High finished his career with a 548-266 record while grabbing 12 Western League titles.

Midwest

Behind the running and jumping of Hakim Hill, Iowa City High (Iowa) won its eighth Class 4A state title in the last nine years Saturday. Hill sprinted past everyone while winning the 100-meter dash (10.88) and running the anchor leg of the champion 4-x-100- and 4-x-200-meter relay teams. His long jump of 22 feet, 6 inches was tops as well.

Sooner or later, Downers Grove South High's (Ill.) Amy Krahula is going to forget the last time she gave up a run. The softball hurler fired her state-record-setting 13th consecutive shutout Monday in the title game of the Hinsdale South Regional. The previous record was held by Rock Island Alleman High's Korrie Klier in 1994. Krahula has pitched 102 2/3 straight scoreless innings while compiling a perfect 20-0 record.

Donald Sage sent York High (Ill.) head coach Joe Newton off to his retirement Saturday with a state track and field title. Sage completed the grueling distance double by winning the 1,600- (4:07.58) and 3,200-meter (8:42.89) races. It was Newton's first state track title in 41 years of coaching.

Southeast

Pole vaulters Chelo Canino (Bloomingdale High), Lauren Tinsley (Martin County High) and Kristina West (St. Thomas Aquinas High), all of Florida, were the featured competitors at the 24th annual Bert W. Martin Golden South Classic track meet in Longwood, Fla., Saturday. West tied the meet record in the girls' pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 6 inches , previously held by Samantha Sheppard of Weston High (Mass.) and Michele Kercado of Woodbury High (N.Y.). But Canino and Tinsley, a senior and junior, respectively, did her six inches better by successfully reaching 12 feet. Canino won the competition, as she was the first to vault 12 feet.

Other standouts from the meet, which included schools throughout the Southeast, namely, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama ,were North Rowan High (N.C.) junior LaTasha Pharr, who broke the meet record in the triple jump with a first-place effort of 41-7; Palm Beach Lakes High (Fla.) junior Erica Whipple, who won the 200-meter dash in 23.81 seconds; and St. Thomas Aquinas High (Fla.) sophomore Talonda Ingram, who won the 100-meter dash in 11.84.
