Ogonna Nnamani named Volleyball Player of the Year

University High (Ill.) outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani was named the Gatorade National High School Volleyball Player of the Year on Thursday.

The 6-foot-1 senior tallied 345 kills, 47 blocks and 24 service aces this season while leading University to a 41-1 record and its second consecutive Class A state title.
University High (Ill.) outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani was named Gatorade Player of the Year on Thursday.

In the championship match, Nnamani pounded out 18 kills to lead the Pioneers to the crown.

For her efforts, she also earned first team All-State honors for the second year in a row. Last season, Nnamani recorded 426 kills and 64 blocks despite missing the first nine matches due to her obligations with the U.S. junior national team.

Nnamani, who was a four-year starter at University, will attend Stanford next year, making her the fourth Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year in the six-year history of the award to go on to play for the Cardinal.

The award also factors in academic achievements and overall character, which may have put Nnamani over the top. In addition to her already impressive resume on the volleyball court, Nnamani carries a 4.0 GPA, has never received a grade lower than an A and is the student body president at University.

"It's amazing. For someone as talented (on the volleyball court) as she is, her academics always come first," University girls' volleyball coach Char Lehnen told SchoolSports.com earlier this year. "But when it does come time to practice, she's one of the most coachable players I've ever had."

Nnamani joins Cretin-Derham Hall (Minn.) quarterback Joe Mauer as this year's Gatorade National Players of the Year. Mauer won the award for football after throwing for 3,022 yards and 41 touchdowns this past season.
