Alabama lineman transfers amid recruiting scandal By Jeff Goodman SchoolSports.com | |||
Former Trezevant High (Tenn.) lineman Albert Means has decided to leave the University of Alabama after a recruiting scandal in which his high school coach is accused of receiving $200,000 from boosters for persuading Means to attend the college. Means, a freshman, said he intends to transfer to the University of Memphis to avoid the negative attention focused on him over the last two weeks and to be closer to his family. The 19-year-old former high school All-American defensive lineman was a top-notch recruit last season and played in seven games this season, starting three contests and making 18 tackles. Trezevant head football coach Lynn Lang, 31, has denied taking any money, but both he and former assistant coach Milton Kirk have been suspended indefinitely pending an investigation. Kirk is the one who came forward with the allegations. "It's totally false," Lang told The Commercial Appeal. "If it sounds too good to be true, it is. (Kirk will) definitely be hearing from my lawyers." The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported that Lang asked former Arkansas recruiting coordinator Fitz Hill and running backs coach Danny Nutt for at least $150,000 in exchange for Means' services. Hill told the newspaper that neither he nor Nutt reported Lang's alleged offer to the NCAA. Kirk also claims that he and Lang offered former Alabama running backs coach Ivy Williams a deal. According to Kirk, Williams got Alabama boosters involved to pay. However, Williams has denied that allegation. The alleged payoffs occurred under former Alabama coach Mike DuBose, who was fired at the end of the past season. Former TCU coach Dennis Franchione is the new head coach at Alabama.
