The Next Vick? The 6-foot-2, 200-pound signal-caller chose Virginia Tech over Tennessee and will try to follow in the footsteps of Hokies star quarterback Michael Vick, but Randall doesn't have the same tools. "He's not a 4.2 (speed) guy like Vick," says Randall's coach, Kyle Neve. "He's more of a 4.5 guy, but he's a great student and is a great, strong athlete. He's not the burner like Michael Vick, but he's special." Randall is the first quarterback from Virginia to post back-to-back seasons of more than 1,000 yards passing and rushing. That's pretty impressive considering the state has already produced players like Vick, Ronald Curry and Allen Iverson.
Randall was also the Class AA basketball Player of the Year last season, and one of the reasons he chose Virginia Tech was because the Hokies recruited him in both football and basketball. Tennessee was a close second, but the Vols weren't recruiting him very hard in basketball.
Finally Turning Heads Turman, who ran for 3,172 yards this past season, has been heavily recruited by Georgia Southern, but South Carolina has entered the picture in the last couple of weeks. "The only big school he's talked to is South Carolina," says Turman's coach, Frank Vohun. "They all think he's a tweener. They think he's not big enough to be a fullback and a step slow for what they're saying they want as a tailback." The 6-foot, 210-pound Turman is a hard-nosed runner who runs right at the defense, but he has also shown the ability to make people miss. Adds Vohun, "You'd better hold on, because he's going to smash you and take you with him."
Changing Minds The University of Arizona also lost a player after coach Dick Tomey was replaced by John Mackovic. Show Low High (Ariz.) quarterback Matt Belshe has opted to head to the University of Wyoming instead of heading south to Tucson. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Lightfoot is deciding between Nebraska and Oregon State, but will consider sticking with ASU. Brown is also looking at Oregon State. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Belshe would have faced stiff competition among several young Wildcats quarterbacks, including recent Tennessee transfer John Rattay.
Domin-ating The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Robinson will visit Tennessee this weekend and is also considering Florida State, Oregon, Washington and Georgia Tech. It appears that Washington and FSU are the front-runners. Robinson, who intercepted eight passes and caught 58 balls in his senior campaign, has been dubbed "Prime Time 2" because of his likeness to NFL star Deion Sanders. He picked off a two-point conversion attempt and returned it 90 yards for a score in the All-Star game.
