National Boys' Basketball Top 25



1. Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) - (16-0) *1
Last week: Routed Virginia Beach Salem High (Va.), 70-43, in the title game of the Glaxo-Wellcome Invitational (N.C.); beat Leesville Road High (N.C.), 79-68; cruised past Warwick High (Va.), 70-50. Upcoming: Jan. 9 vs. Timothy Vincent Prep School (Va.); Jan. 13 vs. No. 3 St. Vincent-St. Mary High (Ohio).
Outlook: Syracuse-bound guard Billy Edelin scored 19 points in the championship game of the Glaxo-Wellcome Invitational and had 17 points and 10 assists against Leesville Road. Seven-footer DeSagana Diop poured in 20 points, grabbed 15 boards and swatted five shots in the title game win. Less-heralded Mario Boggan finished with 31 points vs. Leesville and had 15 in the victory over Warwick.

2. Willowridge HS (Sugar Land, Texas) - (20-0) *2
Last week: Beat St. Patrick's High (N.J.), 61-43, to win the Slam Dunk to the Beach (Del.); defeated Dominguez High (Calif.), 57-38; edged Southern High (Md.), 74-64; beat Clements High, 68-65, in the district opener.
Upcoming: Jan. 5 vs. Terry High; Jan. 9 vs. Wheeler High.
Outlook: Willowridge defended its title in Delaware, and the team's No. 3 guard, Kenny Taylor, earned tournament MVP honors after leading the squad with 16 points in the championship contest. T.J. Ford finished with just four points, but dished out 11 assists and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win over St. Patrick's. Taylor led the team with 17 points in the win over Clements.
T.J. Ford helped lead No. 2 Willowridge High (Texas) to the championship of the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament in Delaware.

3. St. Vincent-St. Mary HS (Akron, Ohio) - (7-0) *3
Last week: Beat Ashland Crestview High, 74-31.
Upcoming: Jan. 5 at Washington Massillon High; Jan. 7 at the Catholic Tournament vs. Sharon Kennedy Christian High (Pa.); Jan. 13 vs. No. 1 Oak Hill Academy (Va.).
Outlook: The nation's top sophomore, Lebron James, scored 15 points and dished out nine assists in the victory over Ashland Crestview. Aly Samabaly and Romeo Travis each added 12 points. It was the team's 34th straight victory.

4. Camden HS (Camden, N.J.) - (5-0) *9
Last week: Beat Memphis Hamilton High, 78-63, and defeated Memphis East High, 65-61, in the gomemphis.com Christmas Shootout (Tenn.).
Upcoming: Jan. 6 at Woodrow Wilson High.
Outlook: Memphis-bound guard Dajuan Wagner continued his torrid shooting with 50 points against Hamilton and 24 vs. East. Center Eric Davis finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks in the win over East. Camden remains without starting guard Dorjon Brown, who is academically ineligible until Feb. 1.

5. Berkshire School (Homestead, Fla.) - (11-0) *7
Last week: Beat Western Harnett High, 89-55, in the San Lee Shootout (N.C.); defeated Union Pines High, 103-41; beat Lee County High, 89-54.
Upcoming: Jan. 5 vs. Bonner Academy (N.C.); Jan. 6 at the Prep Plus Hoops Festival (N.C.); Jan. 8 vs. Fork Union Military Academy (Va.).
Outlook: Quemont Greer scored 22 points to led the team in the win over Western Harnett. Jamal Levy had 12 points in the victories over Western Harnett and Lee County.

6. Pike HS (Indianapolis, Ind.) - (8-0) *15
Last week: Beat Merrillville High, 74-54, in the title game of the Hall of Fame Classic; pounded Huntington North High, 97-68.
Upcoming: Jan. 5 at Perry Meridian High; Jan. 8 vs. County-Warren Central High.
Outlook: Senior guard Chris Thomas, who was the tournament MVP at the Hall of Fame Classic, poured in 21 points in the victory over Merrillville and scored 25 on 9-for-15 shooting against Huntington North. David Teague added 14 points vs. Merrillville. Coach Alan Darner got his 400th career win against Huntington.

7. Ballard HS (Louisville, Ky.) - (13-0) *NR
Last week: Beat then-No.5 Mater Dei High (Calif.), 71-67, to win the Beach Ball Classic (S.C.); slipped past Simon Gratz High (Pa.), 54-52; beat Hatboro-Horsham High, 66-45; defeated Westover High, 78-65.
Upcoming: Wednesday vs. Moore High.
Outlook: Big man Brandon Bender had a terrific tournament in the Beach Ball Classic. The senior averaged 18 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in the tourney. Adam Chiles scored 25 points in the win over Westover and added 16 in the title game against Mater Dei.

8. Westchester HS (Los Angeles, Calif.) - (13-1) *6
Last week: Lost to Bishop O'Connell High (Va.), 73-70, in the finals of the Red Cross/Roundball Classic (S.C.); beat West Ashley High (S.C.), 77-46, in the quarterfinals; defeated West Broughton High (N.C.), 71-56, in the semis.
Upcoming: Jan. 10 vs. Fairfax High.
Outlook: Westchester drops two spots this week after suffering its first loss of the season, a 73-70 decision against Bishop O'Connell. Westchester will try to get back on track Jan. 10 against Fairfax.

9. Male HS (Louisville, Ky.) - (13-1) *14
Last week: Defeated White Station High (Tenn.), 61-56, in the finals of the Arby's Classic (Tenn.); beat Auburn High, 66-52, in the semifinals; cruised past Greenville High (Tenn.), 68-52, in the quarterfinals.
Upcoming: Jan. 5 vs. Waggener High.
Outlook: Forward Larry O'Bannon scored 26 points in the title game of the Arby's Classic, including sinking all 13 of his foul shots. The unsigned senior added 24 points in the win over Auburn and 22 points and 12 rebounds against Greenville.

10. St. Patrick's HS (Elizabeth, N.J.) - (4-2) *11
Last week: Crushed Berkmar High (Ga.), 70-44, in the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament (Del.); beat Midwest City High (Okla.), 69-63; lost to No. 2 Willowridge High (Texas), 61-43, in the championship game.
Upcoming: Jan. 6 vs. Colonia High.
Outlook: Big man Marcus Austin (mononucleosis) and 6-foot-10 Grant Billmeier, who is ineligible until mid-January because of transfer rules, didn't play in the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament. Forward Jamie Sowers poured in 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had seven blocks against Berkmar and added 15 points, 14 boards and seven assists vs. Midwest City. Guard Terrell Prince also had a strong tourney, scoring 24 in the win over Midwest City and adding 12 points and seven assists vs. Berkmar.

11. Dominguez HS (Compton, Calif.) - (11-2) *17
Last week: Beat St. Jude High (Ala.), 61-50, in the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament (Del.); lost to eventual champion Willowridge High (Texas), 57-38; defeated Midwest City High (Okla.), 73-67.
Upcoming: Jan. 8 vs. Cerritos Gahr High.
Outlook: Seven-footer Tyson Chandler went head-to-head against St. Jude's Ousmane Cisse and finished with 14 points, eight boards and six blocks. The 6-foot-8 Cisse had 17 points, six rebounds and four rejections. Chandler didn't play in the team's other two games in Delaware because of the flu. Bobby Jones scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win over St. Jude and contributed 17 points and seven boards vs. Midwest City.

12. Mater Dei HS (Santa Ana, Calif.) - (12-2) *5
Last week: Lost to new No. 7 Ballard High (Ky.), 71-67, in the title game of the Beach Ball Classic (S.C.); beat Myrtle Beach High (S.C.), 66-55, in the opening round; defeated Western Hills High (Ohio), 87-65; edged Glynn Academy (Ga.), 58-56, in overtime.
Upcoming: Jan. 6 vs. Villa Park High.
Outlook: Mater Dei's top big man, Jamal Sampson, didn't play against Ballard because of the flu after scoring 18 points and grabbing seven boards in the win over Myrtle Beach. Ricky Porter picked up the slack with 28 points against Ballard, but it wasn't enough to win the title. Cedric Bozeman pumped in 26 points vs. Glynn Academy and added 15 against Western Hills.

13. Southern HS (Baltimore, Md.) - (7-2) *8
Last week: Lost to No. 2 Willowridge High (Texas), 74-64, in the first round of the Slam Dunk to the Beach (Del.); beat St. Jude High (Ala.), 55-49; lost to Rice High (N.Y.), 52-51.
Upcoming: Wednesday vs. Northwestern High.
Outlook: North Carolina-bound guard Melvin Scott struggled in the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament, scoring 14 points on 4-for-17 shooting in the loss to Willowridge and combining for 28 points in the other two games. Keyon Johnson finished with 15 points and Renardo Dickerson led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds in the close loss to Rice.

14. Midwest City HS (Midwest City, Okla.) - (5-2) *10
Last week: Beat Rice High (N.Y.), 69-67, in the first round of the Slam Dunk to the Beach (Del.); lost to St. Patrick's High (N.J.), 69-63; lost to Dominguez High (Calif.), 73-67.
Upcoming: Jan. 9 vs. Norman High.
Outlook: Shelden Williams, considered the top junior in the nation, put up big numbers in the national tournament. The 6-foot-9 forward/center scored 19 points, hauled down 15 rebounds and swatted six shots in the win over Rice, poured in 22 points and grabbed 12 boards vs. St. Patrick's and had 26 points and 14 rebounds in the loss to Dominguez. Fellow junior DeAngelo Alexander had 21 points against Rice and 19 vs. Dominguez. Both losses came to nationally ranked teams, which is why Midwest City falls only four spots this week.

15. DeMatha Catholic HS (Hyattsville, Md.) - (10-2) *4
Last week: Lost to Latta High (N.C.), 78-73, in the first round of the Beach Ball Classic (S.C.); beat Socastee High, 82-52; lost to Archbishop Molloy High (N.Y.), 60-45.
Upcoming: Wednesday vs. Good Council High.
Outlook: Jordan Collins scored 20 points against Latta and Socastee and added 10 vs. Molloy. Travis Garrison scored just two points in the loss to Latta, as DeMatha tumbles 11 spots this week.

16. White Station HS (Memphis, Tenn.) - (11-1) *16
Last week: Lost to Louisville Male High (Ky.), 61-56, in the finals of the Arby's Classic (Tenn.); defeated Science Hill High, 70-49; beat Sabonis Club Team, 69-56; edged Bathhurst Heights Secondary, 42-36.
Upcoming: Wednesday at Germantown High.
Outlook: Ernest Shelton finished with 21 points in the loss to No. 9 Louisville Male and added 19 in the win over Bathhurst Heights.

17. Vashon HS (St. Louis, Mo.) - (10-1) *18
Last week: Beat Poplar Bluff High, 74-39, to win the Poplar Bluff Showdown; defeated Meridian High (Miss.), 74-39, in the semifinals; beat University Heights High (Ky.), 68-38, in the quarterfinals; lost to Farragut Academy (Ill.), 85-84, in overtime.
Upcoming: Wednesday vs. Sumner High.
Outlook: Junior Jimmy McKinley earned tournament MVP honors after averaging more than 20 points per contest in the Poplar Bluff Showdown. Nicholas Kern added 18 points in the win over Poplar Bluff.

18. Reynolds HS (Winston Salem, N.C.) - (10-2) *19
Last week: Beat Carver High, 81-60, in the first round of the Frank Spencer Tournament; defeated Parkland High, 83-64; cruised past West Forsyth High, 71-55, to win the tournament championship. Upcoming: Jan. 5 vs. GW Danville High.
Outlook: Guard Mitchell Baldwin (UNC-Charlotte) won the Frank Spencer tourney MVP for the second straight year after scoring 56 points in the three victories. Derrele Mitchell had 17 points in the win over Carver and scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in the title game.

19. Montrose Christian School (Rockville, Md.) - (7-2) *20
Last week: Beat Wake Forest-Rolesville High, 62-53, in the finals of the Glaxo-Wellcome Tournament (N.C.); defeated East Chapel Hill High (N.C.), 52-36.
Upcoming: Jan. 4 at Capital Christian High (Md.); Jan. 6 at National Christian High (Md.).
Outlook: Levi Watkins won tournament MVP honors after scoring 26 points and hauling down 11 boards against Wake Forest-Rolesville. The senior forward also finished with 16 points and nine rebounds vs. East Chapel Hill. Georgetown-bound guard Tony Bethel combined for 32 points in the two victories.

20. Thornwood HS (South Holland, Ill.) - (12-1) *22
Last week: Beat Galesburg High, 62-30; defeated Lincoln High, 51-40, in the semifinals of the State Farm Classic; edged Marshall High, 65-64, in the Class AA finals; beat Rock Falls High, 64-56, in the overall title game.
Upcoming: Jan. 6 in the Valpo Tournament; Jan. 8 vs. Lincoln-Way High.
Outlook: Seven-footer Eddy Curry had a big week, pouring in 30 points against Lincoln and adding 20 points and 10 boards in the victory over Galesburg. Curry also finished with 25 vs. Marshall.

21. St. Edward HS (Lakwewood, Ohio) - (6-1) *25
Last week: Beat new No. 22 Germantown Academy (Pa.), 74-63, in the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament (Del.); defeated Mayfair High (Calif.), 56-42; lost to Coatesville High (Pa.), 70-57.
Upcoming: Jan. 5 vs. Western Reserve Academy.
Outlook: Jawad Williams was a one-man show against Germantown (34 points, 18 rebounds) and added 16 points and seven boards in the loss to Coatesville. Samario Clancy led the team with 18 points against Coatesville.

22. Germantown Academy (Fort Washington, Pa.) - (13-2) *NR
Last week: Lost to then-No. 25 St. Edward's High (Ohio), 74-63, in the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament (Del.); beat Bishop Loughlin High (N.Y.), 63-57; edged Sanford High, 57-53.
Upcoming: Jan. 6 vs. Episcopal Academy; Jan. 9 at Chestnut Hill Academy.
Outlook: Matt Walsh and Mike Slattery each scored 15 in the loss to St. Edward's, a rematch of last year's game won by Germantown by six points. Walsh poured in 29 in the win over Bishop Loughlin and had 20 points and six boards in the victory over Sanford.

23. Champagnat Catholic HS (Hialeah, Fla.) - (15-0) *NR
Last week: Beat Lexington High (S.C.), 67-51, to win the Hooters Holiday Tournament (Fla.); defeated Lakewood High, 76-61, in the semifinals; beat Lake Wales High.
Outlook: Martin Osimani earned tournament MVP honors. He scored 13 points, hauled down 12 boards and dished out eight assists against Lakewood. Manuel Guzman scored 29 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the contest.

24. West Aurora HS (West Aurora, Ill.) - (10-1) *23
Last week: Beat Oak Park High, 53-49, in the first round of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament; defeated Peoria Manual High, 50-48, in the quarterfinals; lost to Danville High, 57-52, in the semifinals; defeated Lockport High, 62-54, in the third-place game.
Outlook: Senior forward Jamaal Thompson hit a layup with three seconds left to give the team a win over Peoria Manual. Thompson scored 18 in the loss to Danville and added 19 points and nine rebounds vs. Lockport.

25. De La Salle HS (Concord, Calif.) - (8-3) *13
Last week: Lost to Dobson High (Ariz.), 72-53, in the fourth-place game at the National Prep Classic (Calif.); lost to Moeller High (Ohio), 75-56, in the quarterfinals; beat Brighton High (Utah), 79-42, in the semis.
Upcoming: Jan. 9 vs. Freedom High.
Outlook: Joe See averaged 21 points per contest in the National Prep Classic tournament. He scored 30 of the team's 56 points in the loss to Moeller.

Team to Watch:

Seattle Prep (Seattle, Wash.) - (10-0)
Last week: Beat Kennedy High, 85-54, to capture the Seattle Prep Holiday Tournament; defeated Washington High, 76-45, in the semifinals; edged Rainier Beach High, 64-62.
Upcoming: Jan. 5 vs. Nathan Hale High.
Outlook: Erik Bond had 28 points and 13 boards in the victory against Rainier Beach and averaged 21 points per contest in the two tournament wins.

Dropped out:

No. 12 Miami Northwestern HS (Miami, Fla.) - (11-3)
Last week: Beat Hillcrest High, 59-47, before going 2-2 at the Magic City Tournament in Alabama. Outlook: Mississippi State-bound senior guard Winsome Frazier scored 38 points in the win against Hillcrest, while Joseph Strada added 10 rebounds and four steals.

No. 21 St. Raymond's HS (Bronx, N.Y.) - (5-4)
Last week: Lost to Hatboro-Horsham High, 56-55, in the Beach Ball Classic (S.C.); lost to Westover High, 82-73; beat Mt. Vernon High (Va.), 76-69.
Upcoming: Jan. 5 vs. All Hallows High (N.Y.).
Outlook: Guard Julius Hodge was held to 15 points in the opening-round loss to Hatboro-Horsham and rebounded with a 29-point, seven-rebound effort against Westover. Hofstra-bound Chris McRae scored 12 points in the first game and had 15 points vs. Westover.

No. 24 Flint Northern HS (Flint, Mich.) - (4-1)
Last week: Lost to Detroit Central High, 78-72.
Outlook: The Vikings lost their first game of the season after arriving at the game 1 ½ hours late because of a mechanical problem on the bus. Jaquan Hart led the team with 26 points and Matt Trannon added 14.
