Mass. football player dies

The death of John Yessayan, a freshman football player at the Boston Latin School (Boston, Mass.), yesterday (Oct. 4) is the latest in a series of recent tragedies involving high school football players nationwide.

Yessayan, 14, collapsed while running laps during freshman team football practice at Clemente Field in Boston yesterday. Boston Latin football coach and athletic director Paul Costello tried to resuscitate Yessayan, who was later pronounced dead at Children's Hospital. The cause of death has yet to be released from the hospital, per the request of Yessayan's parents.

"The loss of a student is a horrible tragedy that affects the entire school community," said Boston Schools Superintendent Thomas Payzant in a release. "This loss is particularly difficult for those students."

"It's a reality check for all of us," says Concord-Carlisle High (Concord, Mass.) athletic director Brent Clark, whose teams compete in the Dual County League with Boston Latin School. "You do all you can, you take all the precautions you can, you try to do the right thing and sometimes it isn't enough."

Yessayan is the latest athlete to die this year while playing or practicing high school football. Most of the deaths were linked to heart trouble.

Jeremy Tarlea of Saline, Miss., Brian Bell of Monsignor Pace High (Opa Locka, Fla.), Varina High's (Richmond, Va.) Anthony Craig Lobrano and St. Clair County High's (Odenville, Ala.) Jeremy Bryant Ragsdale have all died this year as a result of undetected heart conditions.
