CELEBRATION, Fla. Have you ever wanted to be an analyst on ESPN's "SportsCenter" or learn how to fly fish? ESPN's Great Outdoor Games presented by Dodge offers those opportunities and more at its Base Camp at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, July 7-10.
Interspersed among the Timber, Sporting Dogs and Archery venues, Base Camp is the hub of the Games. Base Camp is filled with rustic, cabin-style tents, each featuring interactive activities, displays, and live entertainment designed to appeal to all ages.
Featured at this year's Games are: ESPN the Truck, Sand Art, Beads, Airbrush, Gold Mining, Spin Art, Cookies, Discover Fly Fishing and a booth featuring Walt Disney World BASS fishing excursions.
"The Great Outdoor Games is a family event, and Base Camp is the perfect opportunity for children and adults to relax and take part in activities outside of the competitions," said Eric Lopez, assistant director of the Great Outdoor Games. "From stepping onto a real "SportsCenter" set to panning for gold, it is a way for ESPN to bring the touch, taste and feel of the Games to the fan."
ESPN the Truck, an 18-wheel mobile unit, allows fans to tape and take home their "on-air" anchoring of "SportsCenter." Visitors also can gain instant stardom when they appear on the cover of "ESPN The Magazine." Tape of ESPN interviews and past promos are constantly playing and instant prizes are continuously given away.
Fans who have a creative penchant can receive face painting and a temporary tattoo at the Airbrush base lodge, create necklaces and bracelets in the Beads tent, paint a picture with Spin Art and make a piece of art with colored sand in the Sand Art base lodge. These free activities let fans explore their creative talents and take home prizes from the Games.
Though there's also a Cookie base lodge, chocolate chips and sugar are nowhere to be found. Instead, children will take home a miniature version of the 20-inch discs cut by Timber competitors, aptly called cookies.
Or, the entire family can strike gold at the Gold Mining base lodge. Games' fans have the opportunity to pan for gold at the lodge with a trough under running water.
Interested in fishing? Visitors can sign up for a guided tour on Disney's lakes in a BASS fishing excursion and learn to cast in the Discover Fly Fishing base lodge.
"Base Camp features events for both the young and the young at heart," said Lopez. "We invite people of all ages to come and enjoy the Great Outdoor Games and participate in the many activities Base Camp has to offer."
Food and entertainment also are available in the epicenter of Base Camp. All activities at base lodges are free of charge with the purchase of a $5 general admission ticket to the Games. Children 10 and younger receive free admission.
Fans can catch the Great Outdoor Games live July 7-10, 2005 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and Tenoroc Shooting Sports and Training Facility.
Admission to the 2005 Great Outdoor Games at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex is $5 per person per day, with children 10 and under free. Admission to Tenoroc Shooting Sports and Training Facility is free. Re-entry is allowed each day.
