| It's Erdmann again with Boom Run gold By Kevin Freking Special to GOG
Erdmann, 19, of LaCrosse, Wis., defeated Shana Martin of Madison, Wis., with a time of 17.29 seconds. Martin, who fell on the second-to-last log, finished with a time of 56.99 seconds. Erdmann had to win two races to get to the finals. It was her first race against Elizabeth Hoeschler that proved most exciting and scary. Just as she was about to win the race, she slipped on the last log and slammed hip-first into the dock. She was clearly stunned and sore, but she still managed to complete the event in just under 17 seconds. "I knew I wasn't going to stay up, so I tried to jump towards the dock, which is really stupid," Erdmann said. "I didn't know what else to do." In the event, eight logs are tied end-to-end. The logs bob and revolve as the runners cross them. The logs stretch about 30 yards. Once the runners cross them, they have to round a barrell and sprint back to the starting line. Erdmann ran the three best times in the competition. She made it look easy in the finals. "My start was what was really good," she said. "I was less nervous than I usually am. When I was coming back, I wobbled a little bit, but I knew I could do it. I was ahead of her speed-wise, so I just needed to stay up."
She was not disappointed in the least with her silver medal. "I didn't think I would make it through the first round even," she said. "And then, Taylor Dufffie is just incredible. She is practically unbeatable, so I was just in shock when I won. I didn't plan on beating Mandy. She is just so light on her feet and takes such large strides all the way across, you just can't beat Mandy. When I fell in, I was laughing so hard I couldn't get back up. Maybe I should have wanted it more, but I was just glad to be there competing against Mandy." In the consolation finals, Maggie Bulk of LaCrosse, Wis., took the bronze with a time of 40.17 seconds. Duffy completed the race in 1:18. Both runners fell twice and had a hard time getting back on the logs as exhaustion began to set in. |
