Viewers can expect some 40 hours of Great Outdoor Games coverage to continue on ESPN and on ESPN2

Speed Climbing
Speed Climbing is one of the events that will introduce viewers to the broadcast coverage of the GO Games.
Broadcasts of the 2001 ESPN Great Outdoor Games Presented by Jeep Liberty began Thursday and the programming will total 40.5 hours, including 19 original hours. Highlights include:

  • For the second consecutive year, a world record in Big Air Dog, 23', 1" by "Jerry," the only mixed breed in the competition, a Chesapeake Retriever/English Pointer from Troy, N.Y. He actually surpassed the old record (22', 5") three times, once in each round. The new record was set in the second round (aired on ABC Sunday, July 29 at 1:30 p.m.) and equaled in the finals (on ESPN2 July 29 at 8 p.m.)

  • The eight repeat winners included J.R. Salzman in Log Rolling and Boom Run and Peter Thliveros who defended his Bass Fishing crown and will now face seven of his competitors in New Orleans at the BASS Masters Classic August 2-4 and on ESPN2.

  • The U.S. led all nations with 57 medals, followed by Canada with eight and New Zealand with five. In addition, three medals were won by Australians, one to a native of Great Britain and one medal will be proudly displayed in Crooked Island, Bahamas.

  • Wisconsin residents took home 16 medals, followed by New York (6), Minnesota (4) and three each for Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Texas. In all 29 states were represented at the Games, with medals returning to 23 of them.

  • Of the the many familial connections at the Great Outdoor Games (competitors included spouses, parents and children, and siblings. The most successful were J.R. Salzman and his sister, Tina, who each defended their title in Log Rolling. Both were raised in Wisconsin, although J.R. now lives in Minnesota.

  • The Retriever Trials event was won by the most decorated retriever in history — "Super Sue" of College Park, Ga. — with all five major titles in the three national retriever organizations. With those victories, her official name is FC, AFC, MHR, HRCH Day's End Hillview Super Sue MH. No wonder they shorten it to "Super Sue." Overall, more than 300 participants — 400 including the canine competitors — took part in Lake Placid, N.Y. July 12-15, in 21 events in four sport categories — Fishing, Sporting Dogs, Target Sports and Timber Events.
