ESPN Great Outdoor Games Day 3 wrap-up
ESPN Outdoors Communications — July 13, 2002

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Shaw Grigsby was invited to participate in the Bass Fishing competition at the third annual ESPN Great Outdoor Games presented by Dodge as an alternate. Not being one to let an opportunity go to waste, the Gainesville, Fla. angler took full advantage on Saturday to claim the gold medal.

Grigsby brought in five bass weighing 12 pounds 4 ounces in his winning effort. Last year's silver and bronze medallists pulled off a repeat performance as Texans Gary Klein (Weatherford) and Clark Wendlandt (Cedar Park) brought in 9-13 and 8-12 respectively.

Two-time gold medallist Peter Thliveros actually ended up tied with Wendlandt for third; however the biggest bass was used as the tie-breaker and Thliveros' 2 pound 6 ounce bass was edged by Wendlandt's 2-8 catch.

"It was a blessed day," said blissful gold medallist Shaw Grigsby. "I can't say enough for what's happened to me all week. This whole week has just been … amazing."

Overall, a crowd of 26,200 witnessed action on Saturday. The total attendance after three days for the Games stands at 49,650. Last year the Games drew a four-day total of 31,070.
