An all-star bass lineup

This is All-Star week isn't it?

All the big boys have gathered in one place to compete head to head for the enjoyment of their fans from coast to coast.

What a great week.

You may have noticed that major league baseball is putting on their all-star show the same week as these all-star fishermen.

Of course, I was talking about fishermen all along.

Actually, the anglers were not chosen by the fans like the baseball players. Regardless, this group of professional anglers is the strongest group ever brought together for a bass tournament.

Staying with the baseball theme, let's look at this field of ESPN Great Outdoor Games like ballplayers.

If I were their manager, this would be my line up. And if I were Randy "The Big Unit" Johnson, I'd be afraid of these heavy hitters.

Hitting leadoff and playing left field: Davy Hite, who has been the equivalent of the MVP (Angler of the Year) twice in his career. He's the type player who becomes very focused when his goals are within reach. Extra batting practice, like this round in the GO Games, suits him perfectly.

In the number two spot and playing second base: Shaw Grigsby who is slick around the bag and specializes in anything "shallow," like the fishing he will find in this year's GO Games. He is known for streaks where he is almost unstoppable and continues to rank high in the record books.

In the number three spot and playing shortstop: Kevin VanDam, who just like A-Rod, could eventually become the best ever. It doesn't matter what the weather condition, or whose on the mound, Kevin's going to compete and be a factor.

They talk about his speed, but I think it's his relentlessness and steadiness that makes him a superstar. What a great double play combo — Grigsby and VanDam.

Oh Yeah! Can you say ESPY?

Batting in the clean-up position and playing first base: Gary Klein who is the ultimate competitor. He's never been in the minor leagues, but went straight to the big show out of high school. Klein's been a top professional ever since.

Klein's in this spot because a clean-up hitter has to be confident, even cocky if you will, and that works out to be Klein's biggest strength. He can take an "0-fer" today and be a hero tomorrow. He nearly won the GO Games Gold last year.

Batting fifth and playing third base: Mark Davis, who never seemed to reach his potential until about five years ago when he lost a lot of weight and got in top physical condition. He immediately won the Angler of the Year, followed by the BASS Masters Classic. To date, he remains the only angler to complete the feat. He could add to that by being capable of winning the ESPN Home Run Derby.

Don't let Davis' "good-old boy" charm and personality fool you, he ranks right at the top of the charts in smarts along with Rick Clunn and Larry Nixon.

Batting sixth and playing center field: Clark Wendlandt is perfect for that position. You have to be strong up the middle, and with VanDam and Wendlandt, this middle is unbreakable.

When I describe Wendlandt, I use the words "tough competitor" all the time.

Wendlandt's wife, Patty, often says that as far as she knew, he had never played for fun in his life. He's always competing, always wanting to win. He's another repeat medalist from last year's GO Games.

Batting seventh and playing right field: Larry Nixon, who is one of the elder statesmen of our All-Star line up. He's not quite as competitive as some of the younger anglers and he's kind of fading away gracefully. Yeah right!

This elder statesman is having one of his best years ever. He ran a younger Davy Hite to the wire in the Angler of the Year race and he continues to hold a lot of BASS records. But he still wants more. He's a heavy hitter in the bottom of the line up.

Batting eighth and catching: Peter Thliveros, because he's the biggest man in the field and nothing will get by him. He's won the first two GO Games gold medals, and excels at gunning down those who would steal second base and at catching smallmouth. He's also extremely strong in late innings, always pressing when he's behind.

Batting ninth and the starting pitcher: Rick Clunn is the obvious choice because he is the Ace, our leader. Everyone feels confident when this man takes the mound. He's lost a few miles off his fastball, but he's made up for it by picking his spots and developing new techniques. He's done for his sport what Babe Ruth did for his — and there's no end in sight.

In the Bull Pen: Ken Christ, who is the lone rookie. He's just come up from the minor leagues, but Christ has shown a lot of ability and could be a big surprise. He went through a lot of divisions and tests to make it this far and doesn't seem to be intimidated by the major league players around him.

All in all that's a pretty tough line up. You should be watching when these All Stars take the field. I can promise you there won't be any ties.
