The List: Rookie pitchers By Peter Gammons Special to ESPN.com Question of the week: What rookie pitchers have you seen that have lit up your eyes? The answers from numerous scouts:1. Josh Beckett, Florida. "He may be 19, but he pitches like he's 25. He's going to come quick because of his velocity, delivery and breaking ball." 2. Joe Nathan, San Francisco. "He thew one pitch 93 mph Friday. Everything else was 96-97 with an 89-91 slider. He could be rookie of the year." (Note: Nathan actually exceeded his rookie eligibility last season.) 3. Brad Penny, Florida. "He struggled Thursday, but has a hard, running fastball, poise and nasty makeup." 4. Luis Rivera, Atlanta. "Superstar in waiting." 5. Sun Woo Kim, Boston. "In their rotation by June." 6. About six Oakland kids. "(LHPs) Barry Zito and Mark Mulder are going to be ready in a hurry. Zito just blows people away." Then Friday, they trotted out Jesus Colome throwing 95-96 mph, Bert Snow throwing 92-94 with a great slider and Luis Vizcaino at 95-96. They were in between another strong Ron Mahay outing and Jason Isringhausen closing out at 98. Send this story to a friend | Most sent stories |
