Life on a chain
The first round of this year's draft was dominated by what was judged to be outstanding high school pitching prospects.
But history shows that before you start dreaming of another Kerry Wood, consider this remarkable statistic: that there are only 11 pitchers currently in major-league rotations, including Chris Carpenter of the Blue Jays, who is on the disabled list, who were signed out of high schools by their current teams.
The Braves have been the most successful with Tom Glavine, Kevin Millwood and Jason Marquis. Andy Pettitte (Yankees), C.C. Sabathia (Indians), Roy Halladay (Blue Jays), Carpenter, Shawn Chacon (exiled temporarily by the Rockies because of an injury), Josh Beckett (Marlins), Wood (Cubs) and Jimmy Anderson (Pirates) are the others.
The halls of the mountain kings
Speaking of Glavine, he and Greg Maddux are the only pitchers in the same rotation who are both 100 games over .500 since Iron Joe McGinnity and Christy Mathewson of the '08 Giants.
Going into his start this weekend against Boston, Glavine had lost four of his last 36 starts, going 21-4, 2.27.
Riding with the king
Have many noticed what Adam Dunn is doing in his first full year? This guy is a 22-year-old Jason Giambi who doesn't pale in comparison to Barry Bonds:

The I-10 chronicles
The States of Texas and Florida are in a hot race for the worst winning percentages thanks to the Rangers, Astros and Devil Rays.
Through Friday's games:
Quebec 33-33 .500
Texas 55-75 .455
Florida 55-76 .458
I had too much to dream about last night
Armando Rios is sixth in the balloting for National League outfielders, ahead of both Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones. Rios is batting .257 with 0 homers and 9 RBI and also has a .646 OPS.
I thought she was saying good luck, but she was saying goodbye
There were 17 major-league pitchers with 10 or more quality starts going into the weekend. Only one, Ben Sheets, had a winning percentage below .556. Sheets is 3-7, proving that wins are a team function, at least in many cases.
Take me home tonight
Memo to the Dodgers and Diamondbacks: Barry Bonds is 0-for-10 lifetime against Toronto lefty reliever Felix Heredia.
Strange condition
Indians second baseman Ricky Gutierrez went into the weekend having knocked in nine runs and grounded into 11 double plays.
