Presenters announced for eighth annual ESPY Awards

The eighth annual ESPY Awards, which will air live on ESPN Monday, February 14, at 8 p.m. EST, announced today an all-star lineup of celebrities who are set to join host Jimmy Smits at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

Joining this year's telecast as presenters are Tyra Banks, Jason Behr, Wes Bentley, Lolita Davidovich, Michael Clarke Duncan, Hector Elizondo, Vivica A. Fox, Daisy Fuentes, Thomas Gibson, Danny Glover, Mark McGrath, Joe Pesci, Burt Reynolds, David Schwimmer, Martin Sheen and Cybill Shepherd and musical groups Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Take 6. Additional presenters, celebrity attendees and musical performers will be announced shortly.

The ESPY Awards, given for excellence in sports performance will, this year, honor the best performances of the 1990s along with the annual winners for the year 1999. The decade categories include "Male Athlete of the Decade," "Female Athlete of the Decade," "Pro Team of the Decade" and "Coach/Manager of the Decade." Annual awards include "Male Athlete of the Year," "Female Athlete of the Year," "Team of the Year" and "Coach of the Year."

Michael Jordan, Mark McGwire, Mario Lemieux, Jerry Rice, and Pete Sampras are the Male Athlete of the Decade nominees and Bonnie Blair, Steffi Graf, Mia Hamm and Chamique Holdsclaw for Female Athlete of the Decade. The Chicago Bulls, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Red Wings and New York Yankees will vie for Pro Team of the Decade, while Scotty Bowman, Phil Jackson, Pat Summit and Joe Torre are the nominees for Coach/Manager of the Decade.

The nominees for the 1999 honors include Tim Duncan, Pedro Martinez and Tiger Woods as Male Athlete of the Year and Mia Hamm, Marion Jones and Karrie Webb as Female Athlete of the Year. The nominees for Team of the Year are the Florida State football team, the St. Louis Rams, the New York Yankees, the U.S. Ryder Cup team and Women's World Cup team. Coach of the Year nominees are Bobby Bowden, Jim Calhoun, Dick Vermeil and Joe Torre.

Additionally, the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage will be presented to Columbine High School coach and teacher Dave Sanders, who lost his life during April's tragic shooting. Past recipients are Jimmy Valvano (1993), Steve Palermo (1994), Howard Cosell (1995), Loretta Claiborne (1996), Muhammad Ali (1997), Dean Smith (1998) and Billie Jean King (1998).

The ESPY Awards are further distinguished by their charitable contribution each year to the V Foundation for cancer research named in honor of North Carolina basketball coach Jimmy Valvano.
