|  | Bob Valvano is on the call Tuesday | ESPNRadio.com, the online home of ESPN Radio, will offer fans the opportunity to interact with the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday, when the site provides the exclusive audio for the Classic, featuring Kentucky vs. Duke and Alabama vs. Temple. The Jimmy V Classic presented by Mercedes Benz, held at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J., is an annual college basketball doubleheader on ESPN featuring four of the nation's top teams. Proceeds benefit The V Foundation, established by ESPN with the late Jim Valvano.
During ESPNRadio.com's live, Internet-only audio broadcast, ESPN Radio's Bob Valvano, Jim's brother, will provide color analysis, while Doug Brown will provide play-by-play and ESPN.com's Andy Katz serves as a sideline reporter. Katz will also take user questions throughout the game to be answered during breaks in the action. Ask him now.
The Jimmy V Classic will kick off at 7 p.m. EST with Alabama vs. Temple, with Kentucky vs. Duke tipping off at 9 p.m. The audio broadcast will begin at 6:45 p.m. EST with a 15-minute pre-game show.
In conjunction with the Jimmy V Classic, ESPN Auctions (www.espnauctions.com) is presenting a charity auction through Dec. 20 with items from the Classic, proceeds benefiting The V Foundation.
For the TV broadcast, Brad Nessler and Dick Vitale will call the games with sideline reporter Jay Bilas, while John Saunders and analyst Digger Phelps will anchor coverage. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Defending NCAA Champion and Current #1: Duke enters the field as defending NCAA Men’s Basketball Champion and the #1 ranked team in the country.
Duke/Kentucky Rivalry: Two of college basketball’s most successful programs will square off when Duke takes on Kentucky. The teams, who have combined for nine Final Four appearances since 1990, played in one of the most memorable games in NCAA Tournament history. On March 28, 1992, Duke’s Christian Laettner hit a game-winning shot to defeat Kentucky, 104-103.
New Hall of Fame Coaches on Display: Two coaches from the Basketball Hall of Fame’s “Class of 2001” will be featured: Temple’s John Chaney and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski.
Top Teams: The field features three ranked teams in the ESPN/USA Today poll: Duke (#1), Kentucky (#10) and Alabama (#21).
Torre, Armstrong Part of Telecast Open: ESPN will begin the Jimmy V Classic telecast with a piece featuring comments from Joe Torre and Lance Armstrong talking about the impact of Jim Valvano and his speech on their battles with cancer.
ESPN AUCTIONS TO OFFER JIMMY V CLASSIC ITEMS
Recently, ESPN, Inc. and eBay launched ESPN Auctions (www.ESPNauctions.com), a year-round, online marketplace offering fans authentic, exclusive sports experiences and products from ESPN. Through December 20, ESPN Auctions will present a charity auction benefiting The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Donated items surrounding the Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic will include game balls and game nets plus other signed memorabilia.
ENTIRE 1993 VALVANO SPEECH TO BE FEATURED ON ESPN BETWEEN GAMES
For the second consecutive year, ESPN will televise Jim Valvano’s historic speech from the inaugural ESPY Awards in March 1993, a speech delivered less than two months before his death. The entire speech, just under 10 minutes in length, will be showcased on ESPN between games from the Jimmy V Classic with Saunders, Phelps and Dick Vitale offering perspective immediately following. The speech included Valvano’s now famous words, which have become the motto for The V Foundation for Cancer Research -- “Don’t Give Up, Don’t Ever Give Up.”
ESPN CLASSIC TO SHOWCASE DUKE/KENTUCKY, DEC. 16
On Sunday, Dec. 16, ESPN Classic will present eight hours of Classic Duke-Kentucky Basketball. Beginning at noon, the lineup will include: the 1998 Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic: Kentucky vs. Duke; Schaap One on One: Rick Pitino at 2 p.m.; Schaap One on One: Mike Krzyzewski, 2:30 p.m.; Battle Lines: Duke Vs. Kentucky, 3 p.m.; the 1992 NCAA Tournament, East Regional Final: Kentucky vs. Duke, 4 p.m.; and the1998 NCAA Tournament, South Regional Final: Kentucky vs. Duke at 6 p.m.
ESPN TO TELEVISE JIMMY V CELEBRITY GOLF CLASSIC, DEC. 23
Later in the week (Saturday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m.), ESPN will present the 2001 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic, an annual fundraiser that was held this past August in Cary, N.C. The Golf Classic featured celebrities such as Charles Barkley, Jack Ford, Carla Overbeck, Jimmy Piersall, Richard Roundtree, Tina Wesson, Curtis Strange, Mike Krzyzewski, Matt Doherty, Kerri Strug, Mike Dunleavy and Kay Yow. In all, the Classic raised over $1 million for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. This program will also feature coverage of the 2001 V Foundation Wine Celebration held in Napa Valley, Calif. this past August. The telecast will include interviews with cancer researchers who are funded by The V Foundation.
JIMMY V WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CLASSIC - COMING NEXT SEASON
ESPN, in conjunction with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, recently announced that it would stage and televise the first-ever Jimmy V Women’s Basketball Classic. The annual early season women’s basketball doubleheader will be held in Raleigh, N.C., beginning with the inaugural event on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002 -- with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The V Foundation. North Carolina State will play Connecticut in one game, while Tennessee will take on Duke in the other. Each of the last four Final Fours has included at least one of these teams, and the four teams have combined to make six Final Four appearances since 1998.
THE V FOUNDATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH
The V Foundation was established in 1993 by ESPN with Jim Valvano at the inaugural ESPY Awards. Valvano, who won an NCAA title at North Carolina State in 1983 and later joined ESPN as an analyst, passed away April 28, 1993 at the age of 47 after a 10-month battle with cancer.
